Vermixocins A and B, 3-(1'-hydroxy-3'-methylbutyl)- and 3-(1'-acetoxy-3'-methylbutyl)-11-hydroxy-4-methoxy-9-methyl-5H,7H- dibenzo[c,f][1,5]dioxocin-5-one, respectively, were isolated from the mycelium of Penicillium vermiculatum. Both metabolites showed cytotoxic effects on lympholeukemia cells P388.

Streptomyces development was analyzed under conditions resembling those in soil. The mycelial growth rate was much lower than that in standard laboratory cultures, and the life span of the previously named first compartmentalized mycelium was remarkably increased.

The allergenic potency of spore and mycelium extracts of Cladosporium was estimated by RAST, RAST inhibition and PCA tests. Spores contained a concentration of allergens higher than mycelia. Results of PCA tests suggested that spores contained specific allergens. However, in a comparative study of extracts from different species of Cladosporium animal and human models gave different estimates o...

In Streptomyces griseus, A-factor (2-isocapryloyl-3R-hydroxymethyl-gamma-butyrolactone) switches on aerial mycelium formation and secondary metabolite biosynthesis. An A-factor-dependent transcriptional activator, AdpA, activates multiple genes required for morphological development and secondary metabolism in a programmed manner. A region upstream of a zinc-containing metalloendopeptidase gene...

Key enzymes of the urea cycle and (15)N-labeling patterns of arginine (Arg) were measured to elucidate the involvement of Arg in nitrogen translocation by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Mycorrhiza was established between transformed carrot (Daucus carota) roots and Glomus intraradices in two-compartment petri dishes and three ammonium levels were supplied to the compartment containing the e...

Extracytoplasmic function (ECF) sigma factors are a major type of bacterial signal-transducers whose biological functions remain poorly characterized in streptomycetes. In this work we studied SCO4117, a conserved ECF sigma factor from the ECF52 family overexpressed during substrate and aerial mycelium stages. The ECF52 sigma factors harbor, in addition to the ECF sigma factor domain, a zinc fi...

The dung of herbivores, the natural habitat of the model mushroom Coprinopsis cinerea, is a nutrient-rich but also very competitive environment for a saprophytic fungus. We showed previously that C. cinerea expresses constitutive, tissue-specific armories against antagonists such as animal predators and bacterial competitors. In order to dissect the inducible armories against such antagonists, ...

The histopathological changes of the second instar nymph of the mealybug Phenacoccus fraxinus infected with Lecanicillium lecanii strain 3.4505 were investigated using light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The results demonstrated that L. lecanii 3.4505 could infect P. fraxinus in a short period. At 24 h post-inoculation, the conidia of L. lecanii 3.4505 adhered to the indented ...

1. Mycelium of Rhizopus nigricans when stained with certain acid and basic dyes and washed with buffer mixtures of 0.1 M phosphoric acid and sodium hydroxide responded much like an amphoteric colloid with an isoelectric point near pH 5.0. 2. When grown on potato dextrose agar the reaction of which was varied with phosphoric acid the extent of colony growth of Rhizopus nigricans plotted against ...

We expect that sexual selection may play an important role in the evolution of mushroom-forming basidiomycete fungi. Although these fungi do not have separate sexes, they do play female and male roles: the acceptance and the donation of a nucleus, respectively. The primary mycelium (monokaryon) of basidiomycete fungi, growing from a germinating sexual spore, is hermaphroditic, but it loses fema...
