In audio communication over a lossy packet network, concealment techniques are used to mitigate the effects of lost packets. This concealment is markedly improved if the compressed representation retains redundancy to aid in the estimation of lost information. A perceptual audio coder employing multiple description correlating transforms demonstrates this phenomenon.
Scalable video coding (SVC) and multiple description coding (MDC) are the two different adaptation schemes for video transmission over heterogenous and best-effort networks such as the Internet. We propose a new approach to encode video for unreliable networks with rate adaptation capability. Our proposed method groups 3D discrete wavelet transform coefficients in different descriptions and app...
We propose a new multiple description method for wavelet transform coded images. The partitioning of the coefficients at the encoder is combined with concealment at the decoder to produce descriptions. An optimal concealment method for wavelet coefficients is derived based on statistical characteristics. Concealment in LL subband is treated differently and is based on its smoothness property. W...
Multiple Description Coding (MDC) has been paid more and more attention for its efficiency in solving packet losing problems during transmission, especially for wireless transmission. We introduce a new algorithm considers both the efficiency of the transmission and security of the original information. The performance of the proposed watermarked MDC frame shows its efficiency.
Multiple description (MD) coding is a source coding technique for information transmission over unreliable networks. In MD coding, the coder generates several different descriptions of the same signal and the decoder can produce a useful reconstruction of the source with any received subset of these descriptions. In this paper, we study the problem of MD coding of stationary Gaussian sources wi...
The problem of multimedia communications over best-effort networks is addressed here with multiple description coding (MDC) in a distributed framework. In this paper, we first compare four video MDC schemes based on different time splitting patterns and temporal twoor three-band motion-compensated temporal filtering (MCTF). Then, the latter schemes are extended with systematic lossy description...
A challenge of image communication over unreliable channels is to achieve good compression rates and be effective in presence of channel failures. In this work we use the Multiple Description Coding (MDC) techniques, based on Wavelet Transforms, that have been shown to be powerful against channel failures. We propose a bit allocation procedure that dispatch redundancy between the different chan...
The recent development of multimedia communications across unreliable channels has brought the need for robust coding techniques, such that a partial loss of information does not necessarily imply the loss of the whole video sequence. The implementation of Multiple Description Coding (MDC) schemes based on the H.264/AVC coding standard provides an affordable solution to this problem. This paper...
In this paper we present a performance comparison between multiple description coding and unequal loss protection as tools to encode a layered source. We address a rate-distortion-based multiple description coding scheme and a stateof-the-art unequal loss protection algorithm based on Reed Solomon FEC codes. The comparison is performed using as a case study JPEG 2000 coded images transmitted ov...
Watermarking is one useful solution for digital rights management (DRM) systems, and it is a popular research topic in the last decade. In this paper, besides the inherent behavior to conquer against intentional or unintentional attacks for watermarking, we not only watch the survivability of embedded watermark, but also focus on retaining the watermarked image quality with the aid of multiple ...
