The Stardust samples collected from Comet 81P/Wild 2 indicate that large-scale mixing occurred in the solar nebula, carrying materials from the hot inner regions to cooler environments far from the Sun. Similar transport has been inferred from telescopic observations of protoplanetary disks around young stars. Models for protoplanetary disks, however, have difficulty explaining the observed lev...

The effects of weak breaking of the midplane reflection symmetry on the 1:2 steady state mode interaction in Rayleigh–Bénard convection are discussed in a PDE setting. Effects of this type arise from the inclusion of non-Boussinesq terms or due to small differences in the boundary conditions at the top and bottom of the convecting layer. The latter provides the simplest realization, and capture...

BACKGROUND Structural changes of the brain's third ventricle have been acknowledged as an indicative measure of the brain atrophy progression in neurodegenerative and endocrinal diseases. To investigate the ventricular enlargement in relation to the atrophy of the surrounding structures, shape analysis is a promising approach. However, there are hurdles in modeling the third ventricle shape. Fi...

We propose that the mushroom-shaped structure of the Galactic worm GW 123.4–1.5 is created by a cloud collision with the Galactic gas disk. A hydrodynamic simulation shows that a mushroom-shaped structure is created after the cloud crosses the Galactic midplane. The lifetime of the mushroom-shaped structure is of order the dynamical time scale of the disk, ∼ 10 years. We find that the velocitie...

We present the results of a combined experimental and numerical study of Taylor–Couette flow where both inner and outer cylinders rotate. Excellent quantitative agreement has been obtained between finite-element calculations and experimental measurements for a range of aspect ratios and rotation rates. Counter-rotation was found to enhance the breaking of the reflectional symmetry about the mid...

New 21cm observations with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) show that a significant fraction of the HI in the inner Galaxy’s halo ∼ 1 kpc from the midplane exists in the form of discrete clouds. Some look very much like a Spitzer (1968) “standard” diffuse cloud but with their HI in two phases. They mark the transition between the neutral disk and the highly ionized halo. The dominant motion of th...

The nearby main sequence star β Pic is surrounded by an edge-on disk of dust produced by the collisional erosion of larger planetesimals. Here we report the discovery of substructure within the northeast extension of the disk midplane that may represent an asymmetric ring system around β Pic. We present a dynamical model showing that a close stellar flyby with a quiescient disk of planetesimals...

A method for the fast and accurate solution of the radiative transfer equation in plane-parallel media with coherent isotropic scattering is presented. This largely analytical approach uses the formalism of meromorphic functions in order to obtain the total solution, i.e. the angle and depth variation of the radiation field. A discretization of space and angle coordinates is not required. For t...

Benzene (c-C6H6) formation in the inner 3AU of a protostellar disk can be efficient, resulting in high abundances of benzene in the midplane region. The formation mechanism is different to that found in interstellar clouds and in protoplanetary nebulae, and proceeds mainly through the reaction between allene (C3H4) and its ion. This has implications for PAH formation, in that some fraction of P...

A fast Alfvén wave with a finite amplitude is shown to grow by a stimulated emission process that we propose for exploitation in toroidal magnetically confined fusion plasmas. Stimulated emission occurs while the wave propagates inward through the outer midplane plasma, where a population inversion of the energy distribution of fusion-born ions is observed to arise naturally. Fully nonlinear fi...
