In this report we describe the functional expression of EmrE, a 110-amino-acid multidrug transporter from Escherichia coli, in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. To allow for phenotypic complementation, a mutant strain sensitive to a series of cationic lipophilic drugs was first identified. A hemagglutinin epitope-tagged version of EmrE (HA-EmrE) conferring resistance to a wide variety of drug...

Spinach chloroplasts isolated in media containing salts and the rare chloroplasts which are still within their envelopes alike retain grana similar to those seen in chloroplasts in situ.Chloroplasts isolated in low-salt media lose their grana without losing any chlorophyll. These grana-free chloroplasts are considerably swollen and consist almost entirely of continuous sheets of paired-membrane...

We report the geometric and electronic effects of amine (with one lone pair electron) and thiol (with two lone pair electrons) ligands on the structural transformation of Pt(55) nanoparticles (NPs) by first-principles calculation. Although a cuboctahedral (COh) structure is less stable than an icosahedral (Ih) structure by 1.36 eV for a bare Pt(55) NP, the activation barrier from the COh to the...

H(D) atom photofragment translational spectroscopy has been used in a detailed study of the near-UV photolysis of methylamine and its deuteriated analogues at a number of wavelengths in the range 203.0-236.2 nm. Analysis of the total kinetic energy release spectra so obtained serves to reinforce recent suggestions that at least two dissociation pathways lead to H(D) atom fragments. One, 'direct...

Z. Naturforsch. 58b, 106 – 110 (2003); received September 18, 2002 Benzyloxyureas (4) have been prepared by reactions of diethyl 3-benzyloxyamino-propyl-phosphonate (3) with isocyanates, potassium cyanate or 1,1’-carbonyldiimidazole / methylamine. Conversion of phosphonic esters 4 into phosphonic acids 6 by means of bromotrimethylsilane and catalytic hydrogenation of 4, 6 afforded the target co...

The Moorella thermoacetica aromatic O-demethylase was characterized as an inducible three-component system with similarity to the methanogenic methanol, methylamine, and methanethiol methyltransferases and to the O-demethylase system from Acetobacterium dehalogenans. MtvB catalyzes methyl transfer from a phenylmethylether to the cobalt center of MtvC, a corrinoid protein. MtvA catalyzes transme...

The nucleotide sequence for the N-terminal region of the small subunit of methylamine dehydrogenase from Methylobacterium extorquens AM1 has revealed a leader sequence that is unusual in both its length and composition. Gene fusions to lacZ and phoA show that this leader sequence does not function in Escherichia coli but does function in M. extorquens AM1.
