Standard image registration methods do not account for changes in image appearance. Hence, metamorphosis approaches have been developed which jointly estimate a space deformation and a change in image appearance to construct a spatio-temporal trajectory smoothly transforming a source to a target image. For standard metamorphosis, geometric changes are not explicitly modeled. We propose a geomet...

29 W e all want to change our appearance in some way. For example, makeup helps enhance appearance, although it primarily relates to the face. Many people try to change their moods by changing their accessories, clothes, and hairstyles. Some people even resort to plastic surgery to make permanent changes. We often observe behaviors that stem from a more radical desire for metamorphosis. For exa...

The genetic and developmental bases for trait expression and variation in adults are largely unknown. One system in which genes and cell behaviors underlying adult traits can be elucidated is the larval-to-adult transformation of zebrafish, Danio rerio. Metamorphosis in this and many other teleost fishes resembles amphibian metamorphosis, as a variety of larval traits (e.g., fins, skin, digesti...

1. The quantitative variations of the concentrations of uric acid, citrate, nucleic acids and total and acid-soluble phosphorus in the pupal haemolymph of Philosamia ricini during metamorphosis have been studied. 2. The mean value for total nitrogen in the haemolymph and total loss in weight of the insects during metamorphosis have also been recorded.

Body size is an important phenotypic trait that correlates with performance and fitness. For determinate growing insects, body size variation is determined by growth rate and the mechanisms that stop growth at the end of juvenile growth. Endocrine mechanisms regulate growth cessation, and their relative timing along development shapes phenotypic variation in body size and development time. Larv...

1. Amphibian populations residing in or near agricultural areas are often susceptible to pesticide contamination. Recent evidence suggests that the effects of pesticides on amphibians often exceed those estimated in laboratory toxicity tests because other environmental factors (e.g. predators, resource abundance) can influence pesticide toxicity. 2. To examine the effects of an insecticide (car...

The problem of creating a sequence of inbetween volumes smoothly transforming from one given volume to another is referred to as volume metamorphosis or volume morphing. Several methods that provide the solution to the problem are described and compared in this paper. Tests have shown that some of these methods are capable of produce good quality metamorphosis within an acceptable time.

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a cluster of genes encoding products central to all major functions of the vertebrate immune system. Evidence for an MHC can be found in all vertebrate groups that have been examined except the jawless fishes. Expression of MHC class I and class II antigens early in ontogeny is critically important for development of T lymphocytes capable of discrim...

BACKGROUND The formation and/or maturation of adult organs in vertebrates often takes place during postembryonic development, a period around birth in mammals when thyroid hormone (T3) levels are high. The T3-dependent anuran metamorphosis serves as a model to study postembryonic development. Studies on the remodeling of the intestine during Xenopus (X.) laevis metamorphosis have shown that the...
