Mercury is recognized internationally as an important pollutant, since mercury and its compounds are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic, and pose human and ecosystem risks. Although mercury can cycle in the environment in all media, an important aspect of this cycling is the bioaccumulation of mercury along the aquatic food chain. Mercury, in the form of methylmercury, bioaccumulates up the ...

Contamination of the environment with mercury has been an important concern throughout the world for decades. Exposure to high Hg levels can be harmful to the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, and immune system of humans of all ages. Driven by the need to detect trace amounts of mercury in environmental samples, here we present a miniaturized, inexpensive, and battery-operated ultrasensitive gold n...

Qian, J. 2001. Mercury Species in Environmental Samples Studied by Spectroscopic Methods. Doctor k dissertation. ISSN 1401-6230, ISBN 91-576-6085-9. In this thesis, attention is focused on the determination, stability, reaction, and chemical association of mercury species in various types of environmental samples. Capillary gas chromatography (GC) was coupled to a number of systems for mercury ...

Di-chloro-bis[chloro(triphenylphosphine)mercury(II)], [Hg2Cl4(C18H15P)2], (I), and di-bromo-bis[bromo(triphenylphosphine)mercury(II)], [Hg2Br4(C18H15P)2], (II), have been reinvestigated at 120 K. The molecules of (I) lie across inversion centres in space group P21/n, and in both (I) and (II) the complexes are linked into three-dimensional frameworks by a combination of CÐH X (X = Cl and Br) and...

To enhance the ability to remove mercury(II) from aqueous media, an Fe3O4 magnetic nanocomposite (PPy–GO) composed of polypyrrole (PPy) and graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized in situ and characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourie...

Mercury is a toxic heavy metal that is an environmental and industrial pollutant throughout the world. Mercury exposure leads to many physiopathological injuries in mammals. However, the precise toxicological effects of mercury on pancreatic islets in vivo are still unclear. Here, we investigated whether mercuric compounds can induce dysfunction and damage in the pancreatic islets of mice, as w...

Global policies regulating anthropogenic mercury require an understanding of the relationship between emitted and deposited mercury on intercontinental scales. Here, we examine source-receptor relationships for present-day conditions and four 2050 IPCC scenarios encompassing a range of economic development and environmental regulation projections. We use the GEOS-Chem global model to track merc...

Reported here is, for the first time, an important study of solvent effect on structural diversity in inorganic-organic mercury(II) complexes. As a result, the first supramolecular isomer in mercury(II) complexes is obtained. Importantly, a previously unobserved in situ generation of both inorganic (Cl(-)) and organic ([CH(3)-L1-CH(3)](2+)) ions was also observed.
