The accessory meningeal artery is misnamed in view of the territory the artery supplies. The name implies that the vessel is an important addition to the middle meningeal artery in supplying the meninges. This is incorrect, because no more than approximately 10% of the blood flow of the accessory meningeal artery reaches the intracranial territory; 90% of the blood is carried to the extracrania...
Non-traumatic multiple saccular aneurysms of the middle meningeal artery are extremely rare lesions. In our case the patient was a 51-year-old woman admitted with complaints of progressive headache. We present the CT, MR angiographic, and histologic findings of a rare primary meningeal melanocytoma of the cavernous sinus. The primary differential diagnosis is between a melanin-containing tumor and an extraaxial cavernous angioma. Radiologic imaging cannot distinguish between the less aggressive primary meningeal melanocytoma and the more aggressive meningeal melanoma.
The prevention of meningeal leukemia has long been a keystone in its cure. The need was recognized when it became apparent in the 1950s and 1960s that meningeal relapse heralded hematologic relapse and a fatal course and that its incidence increased as systemic chemotherapy became more effective in controlling hematologic and visceral leukemia. Evasion of a biologic safety net, the blood-CSF ba...
A recent inquiry of whether a lumbar puncture can cause meningeal enhancement led us to the paper, “Frequency of Unexplained Meningeal Enhancement in the Brain After Lumbar Puncture,” by Mittl and Yousem (1). The conclusion that intracranial dural-arachnoidal enhancement after lumbar puncture is uncommon is not supported by the data that are presented. In their prospective study, they claim the...
