Wear debris particles released from prosthetic bearing surfaces and mechanical instability of implants are two main causes of periprosthetic osteolysis. While particle-induced loosening has been studied extensively, mechanisms through which mechanical factors lead to implant loosening have been less investigated. This study compares the transcriptional profiles associated with osteolysis in a r...

The Gorham-Stout syndrome is a rare condition in which spontaneous, progressive resorption of bone occurs. The aetiology is poorly understood. We report a patient with osteolysis of the metacarpal bones in both hands due to an increased number of stimulated osteoclasts. This suggests that early potent antiresorptive therapy with bisphosphonates may prevent local progressive osteolysis.

Wear particle-induced periprosthetic osteolysis is the main cause of aseptic loosening of orthopaedic implants. The aim of this study is to determine the protective effect of quercetin (QUE) against titanium (Ti) particle-induced ERS-related apoptosis and osteolysis. In this study, RAW264.7 cells were pretreated with different concentrations (40, 80, and 160 μmol/l) of QUE for 30 min and then t...

Introduction. The term adverse local tissue reactions (ALTRs) is used to describe pathologic conditions appearing after total joint replacement, and it includes osteolysis, bone necrosis, muscle cystic lesions, excessive fluid collections, soft masses, pseudotumors, metal sensitivity, metallosis, chronic inflammatory lesions. ALTRs are rarely described in the literature breakage of ceramic comp...

PURPOSE To evaluate the performance of a canal filling hinge device for complex knee arthroplasty. METHODS Thirty-seven (4 primary hinge implantation and 33 revision cases) patients who had undergone arthroplasty with the S-ROM third generation hinge device for a combination of massive bone loss or ligamentous insufficiency were prospectively examined with a minimum of 5-year follow-up. Media...

A patient with progressive osteolysis of the carpal and tarsal bones with glomerulonephritis of unusual severity is described. There was a notable absence of osteodystrophy in this and other reported cases who had chronic renal failure.
