Magnetic binary alloy, iron rhodium (FeRh), has attracted attention since 1938. It is known to exhibit a magnetic phase transition from a ferromagnetic to an antiferromagnetic state at 350 K. While its crystal structure remains unchanged at the transition, its volume undergoes a 1% increase. In this talk, we present our studies of several magnetic binary alloys related to FeRh: FePd, MnRh, MnPd...

Magnetic fields may have been generated in the electroweak phase transition through spontaneous symmetry breaking or through the subsequent dynamical evolution of semiclassical field configurations. Here I demonstrate explicitly how magnetic fields emerge spontaneously in the phase transition also when no gradients of the Higgs field are present. Using a simple model, I show that no magnetic fi...

Pure and doped magnesium oxide nanoparticles were successfully synthesized employing a sol-gel process. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by thermal differential analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer. X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed the crysta...

Magnetic field effects on single-particle energy bands (Hofstadter butterfly), Hall conductance, flat-band ferromagnetism, and magnetoresistance of twodimensional Kagome lattices are studied. The flat-band ferromagnetism is shown to be broken as the flat-band has finite dispersion in the magnetic field. A metal-insulator transition induced by the magnetic field (giant negative magnetoresistance...

We investigate theoretically the low-energy physics of semiconductor Majorana wires in the vicinity of a magnetic field-driven topological quantum phase transition (TQPT). The local density of states at the end of the wire, which is directly related to the differential conductance in the limit of point-contact tunneling, is calculated numerically. We find that the dependence of the end-of-wire ...

We suggest a theory of field-induced charge-density-wave phases, generated by high magnetic fields in quasi-low-dimensional conductors. We demonstrate that, in layered quasi-one-dimensional conductors, the corresponding critical magnetic field ratios are universal and do not depend on any fitting parameter. In particular, we find that H_{1}/H_{0} = 0.73, H_{2}/H_{0} = 0.59, H_{3}/H_{0} = 0.49, ...

Magnetization measurements and magnetotransmission spectroscopy of the solid oxygen α phase were performed in ultrahigh magnetic fields of up to 193 T. An abrupt increase in magnetization with large hysteresis was observed when pulsed magnetic fields greater than 120 T were applied. Moreover, the transmission of light significantly increased in the visible range. These experimental findings ind...

In monolayer group-VI transition metal dichalcogenides, charge carriers have spin and valley degrees of freedom, both associated with magnetic moments. On the other hand, the layer degree of freedom in multilayers is associated with electrical polarization. Here we show that transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers offer an unprecedented platform to realize a strong coupling between the spin, v...

MnAs exhibits a first-order phase transition from a ferromagnetic, high-spin metal hexagonal phase to a paramagnetic, lower-spin insulator orthorhombic phase at T(C)=313 K. Here, we report the results of neutron diffraction experiments showing that an external magnetic field, B, stabilizes the hexagonal phase above T(C). The phase transformation is reversible and constitutes the first demonstra...

We consider insulating states of spin-one bosons in optical lattices in the presence of a weak magnetic field. For the states with more than one atom per lattice site we find a series of quantum phase transitions between states with fixed magnetization and a canted nematic phase. In the presence of a global confining potential, this unusual phase diagram leads to several novel phenomena, includ...
