We discuss the logarithmic contributions to the vacuum energy density of the three-dimensional SU(3) + adjoint Higgs theory in its symmetric phase, and relate them to numerical Monte Carlo simulations. We also comment on the implications of these results for perturbative and non-perturbative determinations of the pressure of finite-temperature QCD.
It was shown that tioconazole possesses an important property not shared by ketoconazole and miconazole, its well-known relatives in the imidazole group of antifungal drugs. At a concentration of 3.8 X 10(-5) M, tioconazole, like miconazole, caused rapid 2- to 3-log reductions in CFU per milliliter when added to late-logarithmic-phase Candida albicans or Candida parapsilosis cells. Only tiocona...
The phase diagram of the frustrated 2D classical and 1D quantum XY models is calculated analytically. Four transitions are found: the vortex unbinding transitions triggered by strong fluctuations occur above and below the chiral transition temperature. Vortex interaction is short range on small and logarithmic on large scales. The chiral transition, though belonging to the Ising universality cl...
We propose a modified voter model with locally conserved magnetization and investigate its phase ordering dynamics in two dimensions in numerical simulations. Imposing a local constraint on the dynamics has the surprising effect of speeding up the phase ordering process. The system is shown to exhibit a scaling regime characterized by algebraic domain growth, at odds with the logarithmic coarse...
The two-dimensional one-component logarithmic Coulomb gas is mapped onto a nonhermitian fermionic field theory. At β = 2, the field theory is free. Correlation functions are calculated and a perturbation theory is discussed for extending to other β. A phase transition is found at the mean-field level at large β. Some results are extended to spaces of constant negative curvature.
We consider discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators on the whole line and establish a criterion for continuity of spectral measures with respect to log-Hausdorff measures. We apply this result to operators with Sturmian potentials and thereby prove logarithmic quantum dynamical lower bounds for all coupling constants and almost all rotation numbers, uniformly in the phase.
We calculate the specific heat for an interacting Fermi system near the ferromagnetic phase transition using the Renormalization Group method. The temperature dependence of the specific heat present for dimension D = 3 a logarithmic dependence which shows that the fermionic excitations reaches a non Fermi behavior. The result is in good agreement with the experimental data obtained recently for...
Stationary-phase Escherichia coli cultures showed enhanced osmotic resistance as compared with cultures in mid-logarithmic growth or preadapted to osmotic stress. The osmotolerance that developed during starvation or osmotic adaptation required de novo protein synthesis. Of the 22 polypeptides induced during osmotic shock, five were also starvation proteins.
Short Flexibacter FS-1 cells, generated during logarithmic growth in glucose-salts medium or by filament fragmentation during the transition from log to stationary phase in rich medium, are unable to glide. Motility returns when cells elongate. This strain also dissociates stable, short, nongliding variants.
Singular behavior and the formation of plateaus in the probability distribution in a nonadiabatically driven system are investigated numerically in the weak noise limit. A simple extension of the recently introduced logarithmic susceptibility theory is proposed to construct an approximation of the nonequilibrium potential that is valid throughout whole of the phase space.
