Atheromatous middle cerebral artery (MCA) stenosis could cause lacunar stroke by occluding lenticulostriate artery origins, but atheroma is common, and previous studies lacked suitable controls. We aimed to determine if intracranial atheroma was more common in lacunar than in cortical ischaemic stroke. We recruited patients with lacunar stroke and controls with mild cortical stroke, confirmed t...

As part of a prospective therapy study of 65 patients with acute, nonhemorrhagic, cerebral infarction, computed tomographic scans of the head were obtained at admission, 7-10 days, and 3 months. The scans were analyzed for the presence, site, size, and volume measurement of the infarction. At 7-10 days, the mean infarction volume as measured by computed tomography was 55 cm3 or about 4 x 4 x 3....

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although the neuropsychological literature typically examines stroke outcomes by hemisphere of lesion, the medical literature provides classifications more closely linked to circulatory distribution impacted by stroke. This article examined profiles of cognitive function by hemisphere and by Oxfordshire Community Stroke Project stroke classification. METHODS This study ...

BACKGROUND Secondary degeneration of the pyramidal tract distal to the primary lesion after a stroke has been detected by some studies using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) but its potential clinical significance and the degeneration of the fibre tract proximal to the primary lesion have received little attention. METHODS Twelve patients underwent DTI on the 1st, 4th and 12th week following a ...

BACKGROUND The reasons for gender disparities in stroke outcome remain unclear, and little is known about the value of acute neuroimaging characteristics in elucidating differential stroke outcomes between the sexes. METHODS We prospectively evaluated consecutive patients with acute ischemic stroke. CT angiography (CTA) was performed in all patients within 24 h of symptom onset. CTA source im...

Neurovirulence of several mumps virus strains was assessed in a prototype rat neurovirulence test and compared to results obtained in the monkey neurovirulence test. The relative human neurovirulence of these strains was proportional to the severity of hydrocephalus in rats but not to lesion scores in the monkeys.

Cruzain is an essential cysteine protease of Trypanosoma cruzi and a therapeutic target for Chagas' disease. Eight dogs were infected with T. cruzi; three were treated with an inhibitor of cruzain, K777, for 14 days. Treatment with K777 abrogated myocardial damage by T. cruzi, as documented by histopathological lesion scores and serum troponin I levels.
