We study a social network consisting of over 10(4) individuals, with a degree distribution exhibiting two power scaling regimes separated by a critical degree k(crit), and a power law relation between degree and local clustering. We introduce a growing random model based on a local interaction mechanism that reproduces the observed scaling features and their exponents. We suggest that the doubl...

It is widely accepted among economists that in a system of markets where individual participants are small relative to the market size, individuals have a negligible effect on the determination of market outcomes, so they may be thought of as exhibiting a ’price taking’ behavior. Of course, in order to make sense of this statement one has to attach a meaning to ’a small individual relative to m...

The folding characteristics of sequences reduced with a possibly simplified representation of five types of residues are shown to be similar to their original ones with the natural set of residues (20 types or 20 letters). The reduced sequences have a good foldability and fold to the same native structure of their optimized original ones. A large ground state gap for the native structure shows ...

We investigated limits at which induced blur becomes noticeable, troublesome and objectionable. We used 15 cyclopleged subjects, a Badal optometer with lines of three high contrast letters as targets, 3-6 mm artificial pupils, and 0.0-0.7 logMAR letter sizes. For 0.0 logMAR size, mean "noticeable" blur limits were +/-0.33D, +/-0.30D and +/-0.28D at 3 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm, respectively, but increas...
