A significant improvement over conventional attenuation-based X-ray imaging, which lacks contrast in small objects and soft biological tissues, is obtained by introducing phase-contrast imaging. As recently demonstrated, phase-contrast imaging is characterized by its extraordinary image quality, greatly enhanced contrast, and good soft tissue discrimination with very high spatial resolution dow...

Introduction Individual X-Ray diffraction patterns of biological tissues are obtained via interference of coherent scattering with their electrons. Many scientists have distinguished normal and cancerous breast tissue, bone density, and urinary stone types using the X-Ray diffraction patterns resulting from coherent scattering. The goal of this study was to introduce an optimized method for obt...

Although x-ray imaging is widely used in biomedical applications, biological soft tissues have small density changes, leading to low contrast resolution for attenuation-based x-ray imaging. Over the past years, x-ray small-angle scattering was studied as a new contrast mechanism to enhance subtle structural variation within the soft tissue. In this paper, we present a detection method to extrac...

A soft x-ray microbeam using proton-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) of characteristic titanium (K(α) 4.5 keV) as the x-ray source has been developed at the Radiological Research Accelerator Facility (RARAF) at Columbia University. The proton beam is focused to a 120 μm × 50 μm spot on the titanium target using an electrostatic quadrupole quadruplet previously used for the charged particle microbe...

Soft-x-ray projection imaging is demonstrated by the use of 14-nm radiation from a laser plasma source and a single-surface multilayer-coated ellipsoidal condenser. Aberrations in the condenser and the Schwarzschild imaging objective are characterized and correlated with imaging performance. A new Schwarzschild housing, designed for improved alignment stability, is described.

Snowden and coworkers have presented a model for the 1 4 keV soft X-ray diffuse background in which the observed flux is dominated by a ∼ 10 K thermal plasma located in a 100–300 pc diameter bubble surrounding the Sun, but has significant contributions from a very patchy Galactic halo. Halo emission provides about 11% of the total observed flux and is responsible for half of the H I anticorrela...

We combined soft x-ray reflectivity and x-ray standing wave enhanced fluorescence to study the optical performance and the thermal induced interface behaviour of Co/Mo2C nanometric multilayers, designed to work in the soft x-ray range close to the Co L3 absorption edge. Grazing x-ray reflectivity measurements were performed at 0.154 nm (Cu Kα line) and at two wavelengths in the soft x-ray range...

lipoma is the most common soft tissue tumor but the presence of osseous component within the tumor is quite rare. some studies show that less than 1% of lipomas were ossified. we describe the histological, radiological and diagnostic features of an ossified intramuscular lipoma. to the best of the authors' knowledge, a symptomatic ossified intramuscular lipoma without any cortical erosion and h...
