The physiological aim of vocal exercises is mostly understood in intuitive terms only. This article presents an attempt to document the phonatory behavior induced by a vocal exercise. An elevated vertical position of the larynx is frequently associated with hyperfunctional phonatory habits, presumably because it induces an exaggerated vocal fold adduction. Using the multichannel electroglottogr...
BACKGROUND Non-invasive ventilation is sometimes unable to provide the respiratory needs of very premature infants in the delivery room. While airway obstruction is thought to be the main problem, the site of obstruction is unknown. We investigated whether closure of the larynx and epiglottis is a major site of airway obstruction. METHODS We used phase contrast X-ray imaging to visualise lary...
PURPOSE In the present study, the authors investigated the association between wet vocal quality (WVQ) and prandial material in the larynx during phonation. The presence of such material is indicative of oropharyngeal dysphagia and results from entry of material into the laryngeal vestibule during swallowing. The primary aim of the study was to determine whether clinicians reliably perceive WVQ...
Changes in vertical larynx position during singing were studied in professional singer subjects using the two-channel electroglottograph recently presented by Rothenberg (1992). The evaluation of the method and the examination of the laryngeal behaviors of professionnl singers were the main aims of the study. The significance of pitch, vocal loudness and lung volume to vertical larynx position ...
In stumptail monkeys from birth to adulthood, and in very young human infants, the epiglottis serves to guide the larynx upwardly behind the soft palate so it can lock into the nasopharynx and remain there during respiration. After early infancy in man the attainment of a larynx-nasopharynx connection is uniquely lost, causing the epiglottis to have no essential function.
PURPOSE To compare the effectiveness of various laryngeal mask airway (LMA) sizes and their performance during positive pressure ventilation (PPV) in paralyzed pediatric patients. METHODS Pediatric patients (n = 158), < 30 kg, ASA 1 or 2 were studied. After paralysis, an LMA of the recommended size was inserted and connected to a volume ventilator. Fibreoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) was performed ...
Introduction Larynx cancer is the most common head and neck neoplasia in developed nations. The treatment of advanced larynx cancer include chemotherapy, often using cisplatin. The limitations of many antineoplastic drugs are their low delivery into respiratory tissues, thus the need of higher doses which results in severe side effects, and the development of drug resistance by cancer cells. Th...
Larynx may alternatively serve as a target or organs at risk (OAR) in head and neck cancer (HNC) image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT). The objective of this study was to estimate IGRT parameters required for larynx positional error independent of isocentric alignment and suggest population-based compensatory margins. Ten HNC patients receiving radiotherapy (RT) with daily CT on-rails imaging were a...
Chondroradionecrosis of larynx is a well recognized complication of radiation therapy, which usually occur with in the 1st year. Review of literature shows very few accounts of late radiation induced clinical chondroradionecrosis of the larynx. This condition can mimic a local recurrence and severe and life threatening involvement will require aggressive surgical management as reported in the p...
Laryngeal tuberculosis is the most common granulomatous disease of the larynx. In this study, the videostroboscopic findings and vocal assessments of a 28-year-old female with laryngeal and pulmonary tuberculosis were evaluated. Although it can be treated successfully, tuberculosis of the larynx may cause irreversible changes in voice quality which is very important for vocal professionals.
