Rivenzon-Segal, Dalia, Raanan Margalit, and Hadassa Degani. Glycolysis as a metabolic marker in orthotopic breast cancer, monitored by in vivo 13C MRS. Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab 283: E623–E630, 2002. First published May 21, 2002; 10.1152/ajpendo.00050.2002.—Enhanced glycolysis represents a striking feature of cancers and can therefore serve to indicate a malignant transformation. We have de...

We hereby report a child with transposition of great arteries and regressed ventricle who underwent arterial switch operation (ASO) with the aid of cardiopulmonary bypass and "integrated" extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) circuit. The significance of lactate clearance as a guide to initiate and terminate veno-arterial ECMO in a post ASO child with regressed left ventricle is discussed.

Background Peripheral blood flow is increased by blackcurrant intake in humans [1], potentially by anthocyanin-induced vasorelaxation and vasodilation [2], which may affect substrate delivery, exercise performance and recovery. We examined the effect of 1-week CurraNZ blackcurrant on substrate oxidation during steady state cycling, 16.1 km (10 mile) time-trial performance and lactate clearance ...

A bioartificial liver (BAL) will bridge patients with acute liver failure (ALF) to either spontaneous regeneration or liver transplantation. The nitrogen metabolism is important in ALF, and the metabolism of nonparenchymal liver cells (NPCs) is poorly understood. The scope of this study was to investigate whether cocultivation of hepatocytes with NPCs would augment the functions of a BAL (HN-BA...

Introduction: India represents the highest burden of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in the world. There is a rising trend in the development of coronary heart disease in the rural as well as urban India and two-fold increases in mortality from 1985 to present. We need to bridge the gap between available diagnostic facilities and treatment modalities among health-care practitioners. Aim: The aim ...

When parenchymal hepatocytes isolated from adult liver are co-cultured with other epithelial cells, the production of various plasma proteins by the hepatocytes is preserved for much longer than in conventional culture. This study examines some of the metabolic interactions between parenchymal hepatocytes and epithelial cells maintained in co-culture. The leakage of lactate dehydrogenase by hep...

Skipjack ~ U M (Karsuwonus pelamis) hepatocytes were isolated and determined to be viable based on ttypan blue exclusion, energy charge, and lactate dehydrogenase leakage. Trypan blue staining and red blood cell contamination were always less than 0.1 % , and lactate dehydrogenase leakage remained less than 1 % at 25°C for 10 h. The energy charge for freshly isolated cells ranged from 0.65 to 0...

We describe the isotopic exchange of lactate and pyruvate after arm vein infusion of [3-(13)C]lactate in men during rest and exercise. We tested the hypothesis that working muscle (limb net lactate and pyruvate exchange) is the source of the elevated systemic lactate-to-pyruvate concentration ratio (L/P) during exercise. We also hypothesized that the isotopic equilibration between lactate and p...

OBJECTIVE Insulin causes capillary recruitment in muscle and adipose tissue, but the metabolic and microvascular effects of insulin in the skin have not been studied in detail. The aim of this study was to measure glucose metabolism and microvascular blood flow in the skin during local insulin delivery and after an oral glucose load. METHODS Microdialysis catheters were inserted intracutanous...
