BACKGROUND To analyze the efficacy of antifungal prophylaxis (AFP) with posaconazole and itraconazole in a real-life setting of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) during the first induction of remission. METHODS From January 2010 to June 2011, all patients with newly diagnosed AML were consecutively registered and prospectively monitored at 30 Italian hematological centers. Our analys...

Over the past decade, invasive fungal infections (IFIs) have remained an important problem in patients undergoing allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (Allo-HSCT). The optimal approach for prophylactic antifungal therapy has yet to bedetermined. We conducted a retrospective analysis, comparing the safety and efficacy of micafungin 50mg/day vs. fluconazole 400mg/day vs. itraconazo...

A cutaneous mycoses caused by Ulocladium chartarum in a heart transplant recipient is reported. The infection cleared after complete surgical excision and 6 months of oral itraconazole therapy. In vitro activity of amphotericin B, fluconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole, ravuconazole and terbinafine against the clinical isolate is shown.

Aspergillus infection is associated with a high mortality rate in immunocompromised hosts; more effective drugs for this infection are needed. Oral itraconazole has been studied in neutropenic fungus-infected patients. Using a novel formulation (intravenous) of itraconazole, we successfully treated severe necrotizing pneumonias due to Aspergillus species occurring during a postchemotherapy prol...

The MICs of ketoconazole and itraconazole against Pityrosporum orbiculare were 0.02 to 0.05 and 0.1 to 0.2 micrograms ml-1, respectively. In a rabbit model, orally administered ketoconazole (1 mg kg-1) afforded protection against experimental pityriasis (tinea) versicolor in all animals. Itraconazole (5 mg kg-1) was effective in four of five rabbits.

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis is a lung disease characterized by an immune response to several antigens of Aspergillus species. Corticosteroids are the treatment of choice in the acute phase, although some studies have shown the efficacy of itraconazole. We describe the case of a favorable, prolonged therapeutic response to voriconazole in a patient with allergic bronchopulmonary aspe...

The in vitro susceptibilities of 59 avian Aspergillus fumigatus strains to amphotericin B, itraconazole, and voriconazole were determined using the standard microdilution broth method (CLSI M38-A2). Four isolates showed acquired resistance to itraconazole and voriconazole, harboring implications for the treatment of aspergillosis in both birds and humans.

The antifungal agents most frequently used in prophylaxis and treatment are amphotericin B (and its new lipid forms) and azoles such as fluconazole, itraconazole, and more recently voriconazole. This review assesses the role of itraconazole in paediatric haematology/oncology practice. Its broader spectrum of activity and availability in oral and intravenous forms allow a flexible approach in th...
