Invasive fungal diseases are associated with a high morbidity and mortality, particularly in the context of immunosuppression. Diagnosis of invasive fungal diseases is usually complicated by factors such as poor clinical suspicion and unspecific clinical findings. Access to modern diagnostic tools is frequently limited in developing countries. Here, we describe five real-life clinical cases fro...

Burn wound is a suitable environment for growth and reproduction of microorganisms. The tissue in the burn wounds is not live and do not have blood vessels so, polymorphonuclear antibodies and systemic antibiotics cannot diffuse into it. Thus, the condition of the wound is provided for the growth of bacteria and opportunistic fungi such as Candida, Mucor, Rhizopus, Penicillium, and Aspergillus....

Fungal infections are emerging as a major problem in part due to high mortality associated with systemic infections, especially in the case of immunocompromised patients. With the development of new treatments for diseases such as cancer and the acquired immune deficiency syndrome pandemic, the number of immunosuppressed patients has increased and, as a consequence, also the number of invasive ...

Mucormycosis is a progressive and invasive fungal infection that commonly affects structures in the head and neck, such as sinuses, orbits, and the brain. This infection occurs in immunocompromised patients and is rarely seen in healthy individuals. Correct diagnosis of the disease is often difficult and its mortality rate is 30% -69%. In this study, the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment method...

We report an 18 year old boy with Aplastic anemia complicated by serious fungal rhinosinusitis. Despite prompt treatment and early repeated surgical debridements, he died after about more than 6 weeks of hard challenges with fungal infections. Current strategies against invasive fungal infections (IFIs) in patients with Aplastic anemia may be inadequate for the management of serious complicatio...

Recently, despite the application of surgery and antifungal therapy, mortality rate of invasive fungal infections due to opportunistic fungi such as Candida and Aspergillus species has dramatically increased specially in immunocompromised host. The status of the immune system plays a key role in controlling the disease, yet antifungal therapy is of great benefit in saving involved patients. Tod...

BACKGROUND Invasive fungal infections by Mucorales or Aspergillus spp. are lethal infections in immune compromised patients. For these infections a multimodal approach is required. One potential tool for treating these infections is hyperbaric oxygen. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the clinical course and utility of hyperbaric oxygen in patients with invasive fungal infections by Mucorales or Aspergi...

Healthcare-associated fungal outbreaks impose a substantial economic burden on the health system and typically result in high patient morbidity and mortality, particularly in the immunocompromised host. As the population at risk of invasive fungal infection continues to grow due to the increased burden of cancer and related factors, the need for hospitals to employ preventative measures has bec...

Posaconazole is widely used for prophylaxis against invasive fungal infections in patients undergoing myeloablative therapy. Disseminated fusariosis is a serious invasive mold infection in such patients. Preclinical and clinical studies indicate activity of posaconazole against Fusarium. We describe two cases of disseminated fusariosis that occurred despite posaconazole prophylaxis.

OBJECTIVES Voriconazole, a first-line agent for the treatment of invasive fungal infections (IFIs), is metabolized by CYP2C19. A significant proportion of patients fail to achieve therapeutic trough concentrations with standard weight-based voriconazole dosing, placing them at increased risk for treatment failure, which can be life threatening. We sought to test the association between the CYP2...
