Digital information technologies are increasingly being adopted in the humanities as both research tools and supports for new forms of cultural expression. Some of these digital technologies, in particular artificial intelligence (AI) programs, exhibit complex behaviors described as creativity, planning, and learning, behaviors usually seen as the territory of intentional human phenomena. This ...

We present a computational model that uses intention recognition as a basis for situated word learning. In an initial experiment, the model acquired a lexicon from situated natural language collected from human participants interacting in a virtual game environment. Similar to child language learning, the model learns nouns faster than verbs. In the model, this is due to inherent ambiguities in...

This study aimed at examining the main and interaction effects of increased intentional reasoning demands, planning time, and also language learning aptitude on syntactic complexity, accuracy, lexical complexity, and fluency (CALF) of 226 EFL learners’ performance on letter writing tasks. The participants were first randomly assigned to three experimental groups to be given a task with differin...

In this paper a computational simulation of the imitation of intentional behaviour is presented. Important assumptions which make the problem computationally tractable are introduced and motivated. It is shown that horizontal, iterated learning, and vertical transmission schemes can be used to learn from imitation using the proposed framework.

We conducted three studies that address the residual effects of instructed feigning of symptoms. In Experiment 1 (N = 31), undergraduates instructed to exaggerate symptoms on a malingering test continued to report more neurocognitive and psychiatric symptoms than did nonmalingering controls, when later asked to respond honestly to the same test. In Experiment 2 (N = 28), students completed a sy...

Abstract When first released in 2009, the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) recognised intentional teaching as one of its eight core practices (Department Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) (2009). In 2022, EYLF was revised to include a broader understanding ‘intentionality’, encompassing both educator child within teaching/learning nexus. One changes made this new editio...

Cognitive deficits of patients with schizophrenia have been largely recognized as core symptoms of the disorder. One neglected factor that contributes to these deficits is the comprehension of time. In the present study, we assessed temporal information processing and manipulation from short- and long-term memory in 34 patients with chronic schizophrenia and 34 matched healthy controls. On the ...
