Closing the eyes helps memory. We investigated the mechanisms underlying the eyeclosure effect by exposing 80 eyewitnesses to different types of distraction during the witness interview: blank screen (control), eyes closed, visual distraction, and auditory distraction. We examined the cognitive load hypothesis by comparing any type of distraction (visual or auditory) with minimal distraction (b...

OBJECTIVE To test the association between recall for socially rewarding (positive) and/or socially critical (negative) information and depressive symptoms. METHOD Cohort study of people who had visited UK primary care in the past year reporting depressive symptoms (N = 558, 69% female). Positive and negative recall was assessed at three time-points, 2 weeks apart, using a computerised task. D...

Recall of a storyboard description of an unfamiliar illness was assessed in 66 healthy children and 40 children with chronic illness (cystic fibrosis or asthma). A significant interaction between verbal intelligence quotient and illness experience (p < 0.001) suggested that more able sick children may be resistant to learning new medical information.

The present research examines how the match between encoding and recall contexts influences recall performance. Memory research has shown that recall performance can be impaired when a subset of the studied stimuli is presented at recall (the part-set cuing effect) or when the recall process is carried out in a collaborative way (collaborative inhibition effect). In 4 experiments we manipulated...

On three occasions, 63 adults, ranging in age from 26 to 80 years, all in good health, were tested with three speed of information-processing paradigms (the Stemberg, the Posner, and the Hick), two long-term free-recall tasks, and, as a measure of fluid intelligence, the Raven Advanced Progressive Matrices (RAPM) test. Whereas within-condition latencies for the three of the information-processi...

Alternating-time Temporal Logic (ATL∗) is a central logic for multiagent systems. Its extension to the imperfect information setting (ATLi ) is well known to have an undecidable model-checking problem when agents have perfect recall. Studies have thus mostly focused either on agents without memory, or on alternative semantics to retrieve decidability. In this work we establish new decidability ...
