PURPOSE Studies have shown that bladder management with an indwelling catheter for patients with spinal cord injury is associated with more urological complications such as stones, urinary infection, urethral strictures and bladder cancer. However, little is known about actual bladder management for these patients in clinical practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS Using the National Spinal Cord Inju...
BACKGROUND The screening of hospital admission patients for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is of undisputed value in controlling and reducing the overall MRSA burden; yet, a concerted parallel universal screening intervention throughout all hospitals of an entire German Federal State has not yet been performed. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS During a four-week period, all ...
1. Five pregnant sheep, with indwelling catheters positioned for withdrawal of maternal right-atrial and foetal arterial blood, were exposed for 2 h to neutral and to cold (-10 and wool-clipped) environmental temperatures. Acute maternal cold exposure increased the concentrations of glucose, glycerol and non-esterified fatty acids in maternal plasma and increased the concentration of glucose in...
A middle-aged woman with a history of resected colorectal cancer and receiving chemotherapy presented with a right atrial mass and the provisional diagnosis of myxoma supported by echocardiography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Successful surgical removal revealed organized thrombus instead. Atrial thrombus may be mistaken for myxoma and long-term intracardiac indwelling ...
DOI: 10.1097/NCQ.0000000000000228 academic medical center routinely ensures that all clinicians are following best practices for maintaining urinary catheters. Inpatient and procedure areas at the organization have CAUTI prevention champions who receive routine education on CAUTI prevention and are accountable for spreading change in the areas in which they practice. Anecdotal evidence collecte...
Caring for patients with an indwelling urinary catheter is common in nursing practice. While catheters are essential for some patients, evidence suggests that in many cases catheterisation may be unjustified. This exposes patients to significant and unnecessary risks of acquiring urinary tract infections, extending their length of stay and imposing an extra burden of care and cost on healthcare...
Sporadic Pantoea agglomerans bacteremia in a near-term female: case report and review of literature.
Pantoea agglomerans is a plant pathogen and an unusual cause of human disease typically associated with thorn prick injuries or contaminated parenteral fluids. In the neonate, P. agglomerans has been reported to cause bacteremia or sepsis 17 times previously. In most of these cases, the source of infection has been contaminated parenteral nutrition or has been associated with indwelling cathete...
In this retrospective cohort study, patients who had Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia but who lacked signs and symptoms of urinary tract infection due to S. aureus and who did not have an indwelling urinary catheter had a likelihood of S. aureus bacteriuria of 2.5% (2 of 79 patients). Therefore, we strongly question the theory that S. aureus bacteremia causes S. aureus bacteriuria.
