The mean plane of the fused ring system is nearly coplanar with the phenyl ring, as indicated by the dihedral angle between their planes of 9.06 (7)°.

The multi-membered Evolution Strategy (ES) acting on parents and oospring is analyzed for real-valued, N-dimensional parameter spaces (N > 30). N-dependent progress rate formulas are derived for (1;) and (;) strategies on spherical models. The analytical results obtained are compared with simulation experiments for the (hyper)sphere and the inclined (hyper)plane.
In the title mol-ecule, C(16)H(15)N(3), the indole ring system is planar within 0.021 (3) Å and the phenyl ring is inclined to this plane by 17.32 (14)°. π-π contacts involving the pyrrole rings of inversion-related indole units [centroid-centroid distance = 3.5187 (17) Å] stabilize the crystal structure.
