South Africa has a long-standing malaria programme aimed at controlling both the vector and the parasite of the disease. It has been extremely successful as evidenced by the low mortality rate, the low incidence rate (Strebel et al. 1986, Sharp and le Sueur 1996, Ngxongo 1994) and the large areas of the country freed from epidemics in relation to the situation prior to control (Sharp et al. 198...

There continues to be profound differences in TB incidences as well as in TB treatment and care across Europe in recent years. High TB incidences are observed in Eastern Europe and especially among injecting drug users (IDUs), and there are large overlaps with a HIV epidemic, which is also far from being under control in this region. Further, mortality rates among HIV-positive patients with TB ...

A delayed SIR epidemic model with a generalized incidence rate is studied. The time delay represents the incubation period. The threshold parameter, R0(τ) is obtained which determines whether the disease is extinct or not. Throughout the paper, we mainly use the technique of Lyapunov functional to establish the global stability of both the disease-free and endemic equilibrium.

There are two common methods for comparing disease incidence rates (such as cancer) in two populations (such as pulp and paper workers vs non-pulp and paper workers). In cohort studies, the two groups are followed over time and the incidence rates are directly compared. These types of studies can be inefficient for low incidence diseases when very large sample sizes are needed. Case-control met...

BACKGROUND The report of the Ministerial Review of Trauma and Emergency Services in Victoria, Australia, recommended that paramedics be permitted to divert to the closest hospital in incidences of life threatening situations prior to and during transport.
