Less nitric oxide (NO)-dependent vasodilation and excess formation of reactive oxygen species could explain poor placenta perfusion in preeclampsia, but the pathways involved are unknown. We tested the hypothesis that reduced NO activity and increased oxidative stress in preeclamptic placenta is related to a low bioavailability of L-arginine. Placental endothelial NO synthase (ecNOS) expression...
Sera of C3H/Z/Dm mice bearing spontaneous mam mary tumors, sera of apparently normal C3H/Z/Dm mice at different ages, and a serum of an A/Dm mouse with spontaneous breast cancer were tested by the indirect immunoperoxidase method against cells of C3H/HeJ spon taneous mammary tumor line constantly producing type B or mouse mammary tumor virus particles. The sera were also tested against cells of...
Leptospirosis is a widespread zoonotic disease that affects all mammals, including humans, in different parts of the world. Clinical recognition of leptospirosis is challenging, and the definitive serologic diagnosis assay, the microscopic agglutination test (MAT), is time-consuming and difficult to conduct. In this study, an indirect immunoperoxidase (IIP) test to detect Leptospira-specific an...
The expression of 5T4, an oncotrophoblast cell surface antigen was examined in 72 colorectal and 27 gastric carcinomas, with immunoperoxidase technique, on frozen sections. Highly significant association was found between 5T4 expression in the malignant cells and metastatic spread. The results suggest that the appearance of 5T4 molecules in cancer cells reflects a change which may contribute to...
We present the case of a male patient, aged 45 yrs, with malignant mesothelioma producing granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF). The diagnosis was established by histopathological examination of the autopsied pleural tissues. Production of G-CSF was confirmed by immunoperoxidase staining, using a specific monoclonal antibody against recombinant G-CSF (rhG-CSF).
Eight cases of bowenoid papulosis are reported. The clinical diagnoses were confirmed by histology. In one case an immunoperoxidase method showed the presence of papillomavirus antigen in the nucleus of the most superficial epidermal cells. We consider bowenoid papulosis to be a condition with specific features that distinguish it clinically and histologically from carcinoma in situ and condylo...
A 38-year-old black man died from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) after a 15-month course. The autopsy revealed a pancolitis and a pneumonia caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV). Exceptionally, there also was a periventricular encephalitis caused by the same organism. Identification of the virus was aided by immunoperoxidase methods. (
The G-cells of the gastric antrum were accurately quantitated in preparations stained with an immunoperoxidase method. In 15 normal young adults the mean G-cell count per unit area was 200 +/- 15-9. Serum gastrin levels were measured in 12, and all fell within the normal range (mean 59-7 +/- 5-4 pg/ml).
The newly emerging Australian bat lyssavirus causes rabieslike disease in bats and humans. A captive juvenile black flying fox exhibited progressive neurologic signs, including sudden aggression, vocalization, dysphagia, and paresis over 9 days and then died. At necropsy, lyssavirus infection was diagnosed by fluorescent antibody test, immunoperoxidase staining, polymerase chain reaction, and v...
Immunoperoxidase labeling showed that the F-1 antigen of Legionella pneumophila is located on the bacterial cell surface. Protection against lethal intraperitoneal challenge with serogroup 1 L. pneumophila was induced in guinea pigs by heat-killed cells and F-1 antigen from serogroup 1, but not by heat-killed cells or F-1 antigens from serogroup 2, 3, or 4.
