The technique of transtympanic electrocochleography was initially developed as an objective hearing threshold test by Eggermont. Gibson et al. (1977) claimed that an enlarged direct current component of the action potential (AP) called the summating potential (SP) is an indication of endolymphatic hydrops, later confirmed by Coates who proposed an SP/AP ratio measure. This led to numerous publi...

Hydrops fetalis describes fluid accumulation in at least 2 fetal compartments, including abdominal cavities, pleura, and pericardium, or in body tissue. The majority of hydrops fetalis cases are nonimmune conditions that present with generalized edema of the fetus, and approximately 15% of these nonimmune cases result from a lymphatic abnormality. Here, we have identified an autosomal dominant,...

BACKGROUND Lysosomal storage disorders (LSD) are a rare cause of non immunological hydrops fetalis (NIHF) and congenital ascites. The reported incidence is about 1%. The incidence of idiopathic NIHF is estimated to be about 18%. PATIENTS AND METHODS We report four cases with transient hydrops fetalis resulting from LSD and performed a literature review on LSD with NIHF and congenital ascites ...

It is rare only 1-2% of all congenital heart diseases. The number of cases has fallen dramatically in recent years, possibly secondary to better antenatal scanning. It may be familial (10%) with a predominantly X-linked pattern. [3] It affects both sexes equally, usually presenting during the first 3-6 months of life in 80% of cases. Typical age of diagnosis is 2-12 months. It rarely is reporte...

We describe case report of a baby with Diamond-Blackfan anemia, who presented as non-immune hydrops fetalis. The diagnosis was confirmed by measurement of red cell adenosine deaminase activity which is increased in Diamond-Blackfan anemia. At 2 years of age he is dependent on small dose of alternate day steroid to maintain his hemoglobin.

Pendrin mutations cause enlarged vestibular aqueducts and various degrees of sensorineural hearing loss. The selective abolition of pendrin causes dilation of the membranous labyrinth known as endolymphatic hydrops, loss of the endocochlear potential, and consequently loss of hearing function. Because Na+ transport is one of the most important driving forces for fluid transport, the epithelial ...

Ballantyne’s syndrome has originally been described for hydrops fetalis, which is associated with rhesus isoimmunization; however, hydrops fetalis can also occur in association with non-immunological causes, including Ebstein’s anomaly, Galen’s vein aneurysm, fetal arrhythmias, and sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT). SCT is the most commonly presenting tumor in newborn babies, occurring in approxima...
