Some novel 2,3-dioxo-5-(substituted)-arylpyrroles have been synthesized. Among these, pyrrolidine compound 1b was converted to 2,3-dioxo-5-aryl pyrrolidine 2b. Finally a set of hydrazone derivatives was obtained from the reaction of 2b with various hydrazine salts. The structures of all the new synthesized compounds were confirmed by elemental analyses, IR and 1H-NMR spectra.

The title compound, C(18)H(16)Br(2)N(4), is a linear double Schiff base compound having two parallel 4-bromo-phenyl groups connected across a crystallographic inversion centre by flexible C-C and C=N-N=C bonds and stabilized in the solid state by weak inter-molecular Br⋯Br inter-actions [3.7992 (11) Å], generating an infinite two-dimensional network structure.

Using mass spectrometry coupled with LC analysis we report evidence of diastereomer dependent fragmentation and oligomerization reactions in the ionization of acyl-hydrazone-based libraries of cyclic oligomers. These effects can significantly affect the accuracy of MS-based quantitations, but also provide a venue for examining ionization effects in dynamic combinatorial libraries (DCLs).

In the title complex, [Cu(C(15)H(11)BrN(2)O(3))(C(5)H(5)N)], the central Cu(II) atom is in a square-planar CuN(2)O(2) coordination environment formed by the tridentate hydrazone and the monodentate pyridine ligands with N atoms in a trans-arrangement about the Cu(II) atom.
