Cidofovir is an acyclic nucleoside phosphonate with broad-spectrum activity against DNA viruses, including human papilloma virus (HPV). However, data on the efficacy of cidofovir in an immunosuppressive setting remain contradictory. We report for the first time on the promotion of the healing of recalcitrant warts in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome with intravenous cidofovir treatment.
Focal epithelial hyperplasia is a rare disease of the oral mucosa caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). It appears as a benign epithelial growth, usually in the mucosa of the lower lip. It is mainly associated with HPV serotypes 13 and 32 and there is a clear racial predilection for the disease in Native Americans and Eskimos. We describe the case of a 17-year-old girl from Ecuador with mu...

Carcinomas arising in pre-existing sinonasal papillomas of the nasal septum are rare. To our knowledge only one case has been reported. We report two cases of carcinomas occurring in septal papillomas. In the first case a carcinoma developed in an exophytic papilloma 16 years after the first operation for a papilloma. In the second case a carcinoma was present at the first presentation within a...
Viral infection may play a causative role in human cancers, for example hepatitis B virus (HBV) or hepatitis C virus (HCV) in liver cancer, human papilloma virus (HPV) in cervical cancer, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Virally infected cells express viral-encoded genes that are critical for oncogenesis. Some viruses also encode microRNA (miRNA) species. miRNAs are sma...
There is increasing evidence that the hypnotic cure of warts (infection by the human papilloma virus or HPV) results from activation of an immune response, but whether this is cellular or systemic is unknown. The hypnosis can be by direct suggestion or analytical hypnotherapy when indicated. The evidence is reviewed, and 4 clinical cases suggesting cellular immune response are presented.
Introduction and epidemiology The incidence of penile cancer increases with age, with an age peak during the sixth decade of life. However, the disease does occur in younger men. There are significant geographical variations within Europe as well as worldwide. Penile cancer is common in regions with a high prevalence of human papilloma virus (HPV), which may account for the global incidence var...
Verrucous carcinoma of uterine cervix associated with uterovaginal prolapse is a rare entity. The etiology of verrucous carcinoma is uncertain. HPV profiling of cervical carcinomas may have prognostic value. A case of longstanding uterovaginal prolapsed with verrucous carcinoma is discussed accompanied with a brief review. Key-Words: Carcinoma; Human Papilloma Virus; Prolapse; Verrucous

This year's Lasker-DeBakey Prize for Clinical Research to Douglas Lowy and John Schiller celebrates the science behind one of the greatest advances in the history of cancer research: the development of vaccines that prevent infection and thus prevent tumor induction by pathogenic strains of human papilloma virus (HPV).
