The enzymic nature of the protein moiety of protochlorophyll(ide) holochrome was studied by following the fate of the [(14)C]protochlorophyll(ide) formed when dark-grown barley (Hordeum vulgare) or bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) leaves are incubated in the dark with 3 mm 4-delta-[(14)C]aminolevulinic acid. It was found that: [List: see text]Since turnover of protochlorophyll(ide) was not observed, t...

Biodiversity regulates ecosystem functions such as productivity, and experimental studies of species mixtures have revealed selection and complementarity effects driving these responses. However, the impacts of intraspecific genotypic diversity in these studies are unknown, despite it forming a substantial part of the biodiversity. In a glasshouse experiment we constructed plant communities wit...

Improving crop yields are essential to meet the increasing pressure of global food demands. The loss of high quality land, the slowing in annual yield increases of major cereals, increasing fertilizer use, and the effect of this on the environment all indicate that we need to develop new strategies to increase grain yields with less impact on the environment. One strategy that could help addres...

plant litter is an important factor for soil conservation and sustainability that could modify soil chemical properties and increase the plant biomass production. the aim of this research was to compare plant litter chemical composition and its effects on soil properties in three species including hordeum bulbosum, poa bulbosa, bromus tectorum. first, soil samples were taken in the depth of 0-3...

In barley (Hordeum vulgare) leaves in which the water balance was not hampered, kinetin and abscisic acid effected the well documented decrease and increase, respectively, in RNase activity. When the plants were exposed to water shortage, leaf-water saturation deficit increased steadily, with kinetin enhancing and abscisic acid retarding the rise. Under drought, the pattern of hormonal effects ...

BACKGROUND Archaeobotanical samples of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) found at Qasr Ibrim display a two-row phenotype that is unique to the region of archaeological sites upriver of the first cataract of the Nile, characterised by the development of distinctive lateral bracts. The phenotype occurs throughout all strata at Qasr Ibrim, which range in age from 3000 to a few hundred years. METHODOLO...

INTRODUCTION Reducing plant height has played an important role in improving crop yields. The success of a breeding program relies on the source of dwarfing genes. For a dwarfing or semi-dwarfing gene to be successfully used in a breeding program, the gene should have minimal negative effects on yield and perform consistently in different environments. METHODS In this study, 182 doubled haplo...

Background Image-based high-throughput phenotyping technologies have been rapidly developed in plant science recently and they provide a great potential to gain more valuable information than traditionally destructive methods. Predicting plant biomass is regarded as a key purpose for plant breeders and ecologist. However, it is a great challenge to find a predictive biomass model across experim...

Chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) diversity was found within and among populations (245 accessions total) of wild barley, Hordeum vulgare L. ssp. spontaneum Koch from Israel and Iran. Three polymorphic restriction sites (HindIII, EcoRI, BclI) which define three distinct cpDNA lineages were detected. One lineage is common to populations in the Hule Valley and Kinneret of northern Israel, and in Iran. The ...
