We describe a 27-year-old man with acute cholecystitis, hepatic abscess, and bacteremia caused by Clostridium hathewayi, a newly described gram-negative, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium. This report is the first of human infection caused by this microorganism.
Cardiac tamponade secondary to perforation of a hepatic amoebic abscess developed six years after the patient had visited an area where Entamoeba histolytica is endemic. He was treated with metronidazole and imipenem, emergency percutaneous catheter drainage, and open surgical drainage.
A 40 year old woman with known Crohn's disease of the ileum but no abscess was found to have hepatic portal venous gas by computed tomography. Aggressive antibiotic treatment led to recovery and the ileum was resected two weeks later.
We compared the capability of rapid enzyme immunoassay (EIA) to detect antiamoebic antibodies during hepatic amoebiasis with those of indirect hemagglutination and latex agglutination. EIA is simple to perform and rapid (20 min) and does not require any special equipment (optical reading is sufficient). EIA of 143 sera (including 43 from patients with proven hepatic amoebic abscess, 33 from pat...
OBJECTIVE We describe the spectrum of radiologic appearances of hepatic abscesses in patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), a hereditary immunodeficiency presenting in childhood that occurs at a rate of 1 in 200,000-250,000 live births and predisposes patients to infection with catalase-positive organisms. CONCLUSION Hepatic abscesses in patients with CGD show an atypical radiolog...
A complete understanding of the role for endogenously produced interleukin-1 (IL-1), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) in the acute phase response to inflammation remains unknown. In the present studies, knockout mice lacking either a functional IL-1 type I receptor (IL-1RI(-/-)), a TNF type I receptor (TNFR-I(-/-)), or both IL-1 type I and TNF type ...
