The Reactor design pattern handles service requests that are delivered concurrently by multiple clients. This pattern simplifies event-driven applications by integrating the synchronous demultiplexing of events and the dispatching of their corresponding event handlers. In addition, the Reactor pattern also decouples the generic demultiplexing and dispatching code from the application-specific e...

Cluster tools can perform a sequence of semiconductor manufacturing processes. The sequence of wafer handler moves determines the time needed to complete a set of wafers. This paper presents scheduling problems for sequential and hybrid cluster tools and reviews the performance of several algorithms.

Hepatitis A is caused by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). Transmission occurs by the faecal-oral route, either by direct contact with an HAV-infected person or by ingestion of HAV-contaminated food or water. Hepatitis A outbreaks are uncommon in Australia. In 2008, Victoria experienced an outbreak of hepatitis A due to an infected food handler.

FOREST is a software environment for designing, implementing, and evaluating ecosystem simulations. Written in Java, it encourages modelers to use an object-oriented design to promote extensibility and model reuse. The paper introduces a new design pattern, called the Event Handler Pattern, that allows modelers to extend an existing class hierarchy without modifying existing code.

This paper describes three advances in lab on a chip technology. First, it is shown that chemomechanical surface patterning can be performed using a commercially available liquid handler that has undergone only minor modifications. These capabilities are demonstrated by making and then characterizing smaller hydrophobic corrals, made with a diamond tip, than have previously been reported. Hydro...

Survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) varies across the developed world. Although not all OHCA are recoverable, the survival rate in Scotland is lower than in comparable countries, with higher average survival rates of 7.9% in England and 9% across Europe. The purpose of this paper is to explore the barriers, facilitators and public attitudes to administering bystander cardiopulmo...

The effects of the general-purpose precise interrupt mechanisms in use for the past few decades have received very little attention. When modern out-of-order processors handle interrupts precisely, they typically begin by flushing the pipeline to make the CPU available to execute handler instructions. In doing so, the CPU ends up flushing many instructions that have been brought in to the reord...

Web services became a crucial tool for most of the Internet and Intranet applications and distributed systems due to its interoperability. As the usage is increased, performance and the security of Web services are facing a great impact due to DDoS attacks, XML Injection, XSS Injection etc. The hacker’s major target is either to track the data down the line or to break the network bandwidth and...
