The vast majority of bile duct injuries is iatrogenic and occurs during abdominal surgeries or other interventions such as endoscopic or percutaneous cannulation of the biliary tree. Accidental traumas are responsible only for 1–5% of the total number of biliary injuries. The diagnosis of non-iatrogenic traumatic bile duct injuries is challeng‐ ing as current cross-sectional imaging tests are n...
OBJECTIVE To evaluate and quantify the correlation between surface wounds and internal injuries. METHODS The medical records of 55 patients, admitted over a two year period with a diagnosis of gunshot wound of abdomen, were reviewed retrospectively. Imaginary trajectories of each bullet track were reconstructed on real scale abdominal anatomy models, and data regarding expected injuries was o...
Embolization by a dislodged projectile is a rare complication that may occur in cases of gunshot cardiac injuries. We report a case of a firearm projectile cardiac injury that evolved, with dislocation of the projectile during cardiac surgery, into embolization of the right external carotid artery.
Two months after a gunshot wound to the head of a 12-year-old boy, MR imaging outlined an asymptomatic false aneurysm of the carotid artery. The scan's ability to image in multiple planes with noninvasive visualization of pulsatile vessel flow suggests its use for follow-up examinations of traumatic injuries to the head or neck.
BACKGROUND Ureteral injuries are considered to be uncommon in cases of trauma. The possibility of damage to the ureters may not be considered in the setting of acute trauma when life-threatening injuries take clinical management priority. A case of acute ureteral injury is described in a patient with acute penetrating gunshot abdominal injury that had a delay in diagnosis, with a review of the ...
The goal of this study was to document the dynamic effects created within, and the developing mechanisms of a gunshot entrance wound to the skin utilizing high-speed photography and the "skin-skull-brain model". The high-speed photography was taken with an Imacon 468/Hadland-Photonics camera. Full metal jacketed, 9 mm Luger projectiles were fired at the target model from a distance of 10 m. Dur...
