Group B streptococcus is known to be a leading cause of neonatal infection, but less appreciated is the fact that it causes maternal infection also. Gene mutations in the virulence regulator CovR/S of group A Streptococcus play a substantial role in the pathogenesis of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. We screened 25 group B Streptococcus (GBS) isolates obtained from patients with streptococcal toxic shock syndrome and found only 1 GBS clone harboring this kind of mutation.

The peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) method was used to demonstrate group B streptococci in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections using commercial group specific streptococcal antiserum. Sections from neonatal necropsies in which postmortem lung cultures were positive for group B streptococci showed positively stained intra- and extra-cellular cocci in the alveolar exudate. Many hyal...

The immune response after streptococcal infections of the skin and of the joints was studied in an experimental animal model. Hamsters were challenged intradermally or intra-articularly with different streptococcal serotypes, and antibodies for streptolysin O (ASO), deoxyribonuclease B (anti-deoxyribonuclease B), and group A carbohydrate (anti-group A CHO) were determined. After a single inject...

Group B Streptococcus is an important cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in many parts of the world. The last two decades have seen intensified efforts in the Western hemisphere in the prevention of this devastating infection by identifying and treating pregnant women who carry group B streptococci or who are at highest risk of transmitting the organism to newborns. The intr...
