We describe a case report of a man aged 56 years with a 4-month history of right-sided sciatica-type pain with subclinical disc prolapse evident on MRI. Worsening pain together with the appearance of a tender mass in his right buttock prompted further imaging, which demonstrated an infiltrative mass engulfing the lumbosacral plexus. This was later shown to be a granulocytic sarcoma on biopsy. I...

Introduction. Granulocytic sarcoma (GS), also known as chloroma or extramedullary myeloblastoma, is a solid tumor composed of primitive precursors of the granulocytic series that include myeloblasts, promyelocytes, and myelocytes. Granulocytic sarcoma is a rare tumor that may develop during acute myeloid leukemia (AML) but less frequently may precede its presentation. Although generalized lymph...

A 29-year old woman with a history of vaginal bleeding was referred to our hospital. Transvaginal ultrasonography revealed a hypervascular cervical mass and malignancy was suspected. Computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging, and 18-F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT were performed. She was finally diagnosed with granulocytic sarcoma based on pathological examination.

A 35-year old man presented with acute myeloid leukemia (AML-M2), with 45, X, -Y, t(8;21)(q22;q22) [8] and AML1-ETO fusion. A molecular remission was obtained by 7+3 induction followed by high dose Ara-C and 5+2 consolidations x4. One year later, he presented with left eye proptosis and double vision. Magnetic resonance imaging studies confirmed left lacrimal gland swelling (Figure 1A and B) wi...

95 To the Editor, Baytan et al.’s case report entitled, Cerebellar granulocytic sarcoma: A case report (2012; 19: 177-180), [1] provides an opportunity for me to remind physicians that short-course megadose methylprednisolone (MDMP: 30 mg/kg for 3 d, then 20 mg/kg for 4 d each dose administered over the course of 10-15 min intravenously or orally; calculated dose of powder put into a spoon and ...

A case of a young man with a spinal epidural tumour, initially diagnosed as large cell anaplastic malignant lymphoma, is reported. The tumour consisted of poorly differentiated cells showing immunoreactivity with antibodies directed against CD30 and CD45. Ten months later the patient developed acute myeloid leukaemia. The histological slides of the epidural tumour were reviewed, including addit...

We report two clinical cases of primary granulocytic sarcoma of the pancreas that were diagnosed on the surgical specimen. Atypical clinical and morphological presentations may have lead to pretherapeutic biopsies of the pancreatic mass in order to indicate primary chemotherapy. Literature review of this rare clinical presentation may help physicians to anticipate diagnostic and therapeutic str...

We report an unusual case of granulocytic sarcoma involving the temporal bone. The occurrence of this tumor usually heralds acute myelogenous leukemia or the onset of the blastic phase of chronic myelogenous leukemia. Recognition of this rare entity is important, because early aggressive chemotherapy can cause regression of the tumor, as in our case, and thus improve patient longevity.

RATIONALE Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a curable subtype of acute myeloid leukemia. APL is currently treated with combination of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and arsenic trioxide (ATO) resulting in the induction of apoptosis and differentiation of the leukemic cells. Differentiation syndrome (so-called ATRA syndrome) is the main life-threatening complication of induction therapy with...
