We consider 2-dimensional reflected Brownian motions in sharp thorns pointed downward with horizontal vectors of reflection. We present a decomposition of the process into a Brownian motion and a process which has bounded variation away from the tip of the thorn. The construction is based on a new Skorohod-type lemma.

It is well known that phonemes have different acoustic/phonetic realizations depending on the context. For example, the phoneme / t / is typically realized with a different allophone (phonetic variant) in syllable initial position than in syllable final position. In syllable initial position (e.g., Lorn), / t / is almost always released (with a strong burst of energy) and aspirated (with / h / ...

This study revisits the phonetics and phonology of Shanghai tone sandhi by examining the f0 contours of non-initial syllables within sandhi domains which start with different lexical tones. Results show significant f0 variation due to the initial lexical tones; the variation, however, diminishes as the number of non-initial syllables increases, resulting in near convergence of f0 values by the ...

We propose a new concept of modulated bipower variation for diffusion models with microstructure noise. We show that this method provides simple estimates for such important quantities as integrated volatility or integrated quarticity. Under mild conditions the consistency of modulated bipower variation is proven. Under further assumptions we prove stable convergence of our estimates with the o...

We show that if Bounded Martin’s Maximum (BMM) holds then for every X ∈ V there is an inner model with a strong cardinal containing X. In particular, by [1], BMM is strictly stronger consistency-wise than the Bounded Semi-Proper Forcing Axiom (BSPFA).

The object of this note is the announcement of some results involving integration on [ — <», <*> ] with respect to functions whose values are operators into an intermediate space (see Definition B). Besides several other function spaces of interest in analysis, Sobolev and Lebesgue spaces are particular types of intermediate spaces (cf., the recent contributions of CALDERÓN, GAGLIARDO, KREIN, L...

Previous studies on spoken word recognition suggest that lexical access is facilitated when social information attributed to the voice is congruent with the social characteristics associated with the word. This paper builds on this work, presenting results from a lexical decision task in which target words associated with different age groups were preceded by sociophonetic primes. No age-relate...

This article explores the variation between the emergent genitive its and the periphrastic form of it in Early Modern English, situating this case in the larger picture of English genitive variation. As previous studies have often focused on non-pronominal possessors (given that Present Day English pronominal possessors often appear prenominally, with limited variation), this early pronominal g...

We nd tight upper and lower bounds on the growth rate for the covering numbers of functions of bounded variation in the L 1 metric in terms of all the relevant constants. We also nd upper and lower bounds on covering numbers for general function classes over the family of L 1 (dP) metrics, in terms of a scale-sensitive combinatorial dimension of the function class.

Let (M,g) be a complete two dimensional simply connected Riemannian manifold with Gaussian curvature K ≤ −1. If f is a compactly supported function of bounded variation on M then f satisfies the Sobolev inequality 4π Z
