OBJECTIVE To evaluate structural and geometrical properties of the tibia shaft in subjects with spinal cord injury (SCI) and subjects without SCI and to estimate the potential usefulness of a multimodal approach to diagnosing osteoporosis in SCI. DESIGN A cross-sectional study of randomly selected SCI and non-SCI subjects. METHODS Measurements of bone geometric indices by computed tomograph...

In the past forty years considerable progress has been achieved on the knowledge of human blood as a non-Newtonian shear-thinning suspension, whose initial state, that is at rest (stasis) or at very low shear rates, has a gel-like internal structure which is destroyed as shear stress increases. The main goal of this communication is to describe the role of geometrical aspects during RBC (red bl...

By means of an analogy with Classical Mechanics and Geometrical Optics, we are able to reduce Lagrangians to a kinetic term only. This form enables us to examine the extended solution set of field theories by finding the geodesics of this kinetic term’s metric. This new geometrical standpoint sheds light on some foundational issues of QFT and brings to the forefront core aspects of field theory.

BACKGROUND The study was aimed at the development of parameters that could be used as predictors of vertebral strength. Proposed parameters describing vertebral geometry and/or shape can be established on the basis of routine spine roentgenograms, making roentgenography a novel tool for vertebral fracture risk assessment in the future. MATERIAL/METHODS 20 human cadaveric L3 vertebrae were inc...

Geometry has been present in medicine in various aspects for many years. Information on geometrical form of particular anatomic structures should not be underestimated since it is both basic and key information in many clinical cases, beginning from fractures to radiotherapy. Technical apparatuses and devices used in doctors’ practice also require comprehension of technical documentation in nec...

It is well known that high stress concentrations can occur in elastic composites in particular due to the interaction of geometrical singularities like corners, edges and cracks and structural singularities like jumping material parameters. In the project C5 Stress concentrations in heterogeneous materials of the SFB 404 it was mathematically analyzed where and which kind of stress singularitie...

Due to existence of uncertainties in input geometrical properties of fractures, there is not any unique solution for assessing the stability of slopes in jointed rock masses. Therefore, the necessity of applying probabilistic analysis in these cases is inevitable. In this study a probabilistic analysis procedure together with relevant algorithms are developed using Discrete Fracture Network-Dis...
