Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is the most contagious disease of mammals and has a great potential for causing severe economic loss in susceptible cloven-hoofed animals. There are seven serotypes of FMD virus (FMDV), namely, O, A, C, SAT 1, SAT 2, SAT 3 and Asia 1. Infection with one serotype does not confer immunity against another. FMD cannot be differentiated clinically from other vesicular di...

Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a non-atherosclerotic, non-inflammatory vascular disease. FMD once considered rare, is increasingly a condition recognised as an incidental finding. It is an important cause of stroke especially in younger, female patients and therefore a high index of suspicion is required. FMD has distinct pathological findings along with some pathognomonic angiographic findin...

Renal artery stenosis (RAS) is rare in young patients without fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD). RAS is primarily classified as having two major etiologies, namely, atherosclerosis and FMD, with 90% and 10%, respectively. We report a case of a female in her mid 20s who developed hypertension due to RAS with no evidence of FMD or underlying renal dysfunction and underwent successful angioplasty and ...

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks recently affected 2 countries (Japan and South Korea) in eastern Asia that were free of FMD without vaccination. Analysis of viral protein 1 nucleotide sequences indicated that FMD serotype A and O viruses that caused these outbreaks originated in mainland Southeast Asia to which these viruses are endemic.

Abstract We describe, interpret, and establish a stratotype for the Frenchman Mountain Dolostone (FMD), new Cambrian stratigraphic unit that records key global geochemical climate signals is well exposed throughout Grand Canyon central Basin Range, USA. This flat-topped carbonate platform deposit uppermost of Tonto Group, replacing informally named “undifferentiated dolomites.” The two chemostr...

BACKGROUND Moderate alcohol consumption is protective against coronary artery disease. Endothelial dysfunction contributes to atherosclerosis and the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. The effects of alcohol consumption on endothelial function may be relevant to these cardiovascular outcomes, but very few studies have examined the effect of alcohol consumption on endothelial function asses...

OBJECTIVES We investigated whether reducing post-methionine homocysteine concentrations via various treatments other than folic acid affects vascular function, as measured through flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery. High fasting and post-methionine homocysteine concentrations are associated with cardiovascular disease risk, but homocysteine might be a surrogate marker for low f...

BACKGROUND The effect of isoflavone on endothelial function in postmenopausal women is controversial. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of oral isoflavone supplementation on endothelial function, as measured by flow-mediated dilation (FMD), in postmenopausal women. DESIGN A meta-analysis of randomized placebo-controlled trials was conducted to evaluate the eff...

Flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) has become a commonly applied approach for the assessment of vascular function and health in humans. Recent studies emphasize the importance of normalizing the magnitude of FMD to its apparent eliciting stimulus, the postdeflation arterial shear. However, the relationship between shear stress and the magnitude of FMD may differ between groups. The aim of this stud...
