Pseudomonas paucimobilis, previously known as group IIK biotype 1, was found to have a significantly different enzyme profile from that of Flavobacterium multivorum, formerly group IIK biotype 2. P. paucimobilis produces several esterases and phosphatases which may contribute to its virulence.

The genome sequence of Flavobacterium psychrophilum strain CSF259-93, isolated from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), consists of a single circular genome of 2,900,735 bp and 2,701 predicted open reading frames (ORFs). Strain CSF259-93 has been used to select a line of rainbow trout with increased genetic resistance against bacterial cold water disease.

We report here the complete annotated genome sequence of Flavobacterium psychrophilum OSU THCO2-90, isolated from Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) in Oregon. The genome consists of a circular chromosome with 2,343 predicted open reading frames. This strain has proved to be a valuable tool for functional genomics.

Secretion of beta-1,3-glucanases by the arctic bacterial isolates 4221 and 4236, related to the genera Flavobacterium and Pedobacter, was discovered. Escherichia coli and Lactococcus lactis expression of beta-1,3-glucanases Glc4221-1 and Glc4236-1 from the respective isolates was achieved. The enzymes hydrolyzed fungal cell walls and retained activity at low temperatures.

Two new 7-formamidocephalosporins have been isolated as their acetyl derivatives (SQ 28,516 and SQ 28,517) from fermentations of a Flavobacterium sp. SC 12,154. Structure 1 was deduced for SQ 28,516 from its spectroscopic properties while structure 2 was proposed for SQ 28,517. SQ 28,516 exhibits weak antibacterial activity.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of Brazilian plants extracts against fish pathogenic bacteria. Forty six methanolic extracts were screened to identify their antibacterial properties against Streptococcus agalactiae, Flavobacterium columnare and Aeromonas hydrophila. Thirty one extracts showed antibacterial activity.

The cellular fatty acid composition of Pseudomonas paucimobilis (IIk-1) and group IIk-2, Ve-1, and Ve-2 was determined by gas-liquid chromatography. The unnamed groups were readily distinguished from P. paucimobilis by cellular fatty acids. The data strongly suggest that these bacteria may be additional species of Pseudomonas and Flavobacterium.
