This paper investigates the relation between the sound patterns of interjections and their functional realisation in the discourse process. It considers whether certain interjection functions tend to have particular sound distributions. In order to address these questions a classification scheme for American English nonlexical interjections in terms of discourse markers is also presented.
Historically, causal markers, syntactic structures and connectives have been the sole identifying features for automatically extracting causal relations in natural language discourse. However various connectives such as “and”, prepositions such as “as” and other syntactic structures are highly ambiguous in nature, and it is clear that one cannot solely rely on lexico-syntactic markers for detec...
This paper, which is based on a multimodal corpus of conversational French, aims at describing some prosodic and gestural characteristics of the three discourse markers ‘donc’ (‘so’), ‘alors’ (‘so’ or ‘then’) and ‘en fait’ (‘in fact’). The pragmatic functions of ‘donc’ and ‘alors’ have been deeply analyzed in a few studies (Mosegaard-Hansen [9], Vlemings [12] and Zénone [13, 14]) but none of th...

This paper reports on an experiment implementing a data-intensive approach to discourse organisation. Its focus is on enumerative structures envisaged as a type of textual pattern in a sequentiality-oriented approach to discourse. On the basis of a large-scale annotation exercise calling upon automatic feature mark-up alongside manual annotation, we explore a method to identify complex discours...

This study describes how young Spanish-speaking children become gradually more adept at encoding temporality using grammar and discourse skills in intra-conversational narratives. The research involved parallel case studies of two Spanish-speaking children followed longitudinally from ages two to three. Type/token frequencies of verb tense, temporal/aspectual markers and narrative components we...
This study aims at retrieving tweets with an implicit topic, which cannot be identified by the current query-matching system employed by Twitter. Such tweets are relevant to a given query but do not explicitly contain the term. When these tweets are combined with a relevant tweet containing the overt keyword, the “serialized” tweets can be integrated into the same discourse context. To this end...
We propose a robust answer reranking model for non-factoid questions that integrates lexical semantics with discourse information, driven by two representations of discourse: a shallow representation centered around discourse markers, and a deep one based on Rhetorical Structure Theory. We evaluate the proposed model on two corpora from different genres and domains: one from Yahoo! Answers and ...
