Xanthoma disseminatum (XD) is a rare mucocutaneous xanthomatosis classified as a benign form of non-Langerhans' cell histiocytosis. The case history is presented of a 61 year old woman with XD who developed dyspnoea and spirometric features of airflow obstruction. Bronchoscopy and computed tomography confirmed involvement of the large and medium sized bronchi and she subsequently died from acut...
Tritium-labeled cholesterol has been fed to a selected series of patients to demonstrate a quantitative metabolic defect in lipid metabolism in the presence of abnormal serum lipoprotein spectra. Patients with abnormal serum lipoprotein spectra carry a greater fraction of their newly absorbed cholesterol in the esterified form than do normals. THE LIPOPROTEINS of human serum are conveniently de...
We present a very rare case of intracranial xanthoma with bilateral temporal bone involvement. The lesion caused destruction and remodelling in mastoid air cells. On the right side, cerebellar compression was obvious. The patient was operated on the symptomatic side and the lesion was totally removed.
Xanthomas are associated with a spectrum of medical conditions, most commonly disorders of lipid storage and lipid metabolism. They occur primarily in the subcutaneous tissues, especially along the Achilles tendon and the extensor tendons of the hands. Intracranial xanthomas are extremely rare. We present a case of an extensive xanthoma of the temporal bone in a patient with hyperlipidemia.
Verruciform xanthoma is a rare benign tumor first described by Shafer in 1971. It usually arises on the oral mucosa. An 11-year-old boy was referred to our outpatient clinic for evaluation of a lesion that had been present on the tongue for 6 weeks and was slightly tender on palpation. The child had been diagnosed with acute myeloblastic leukemia 4 years earlier and had received 2 allogeneic bo...
We present a 7-year-old girl with no past history of interest, who was seen for an asymptomatic lesion that had arisen in the right axilla 3 months earlier and had grown progressively, but that had remained stable after a cycle of cryotherapy in her health center 2 months earlier. Examination revealed a well-defined oval papule in the right axilla. The papule was of yellowish color centrally an...
Background: Xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP) is a common cutaneous xanthoma often associated with dyslipidemia. Carotid intima–media thickness (CIMT) non-invasive method of monitoring subclinical atherosclerotic plaque formation and its progression. This study was conducted to assess the cardiovascular comorbidities in patients XP by measuring CIMT serum lipid profile. Materials Methods: A total ei...
RATIONALE Xanthomatosis associated with monoclonal gammopathy includes hyperlipidaemic xanthoma (HX), normolipidaemic xanthoma (NX) and necrobiotic xanthogranuloma (NXG). All three pathologies are characterized by skin or visceral lesions related to cholesterol accumulation, monoclonal immunoglobulin (MIg) and hypocomplementemia. The pathophysiology underlying NXG remains unknown although the i...

Xanthelasma can be treated with acids, laser or primary suture, all presenting frequent relapses besides being inefficacious in extensive cases. The authors present the functional and esthetic result of a female patient's case with extensive xanthelasmas on the upper and lower eyelids which were removed combined with upper and lower blepharoplasty, using the skin removed from the upper eyelids ...
