Desert shrubs, a dominant component of desert ecosystems, need to maintain sufficient levels of nutrients in their different organs to ensure operation of various physiological functions for the purpose of survival and reproduction. In the present study, we analyzed 10 elements in leaves, stems, and roots of 24 dominant shrub species from 52 sites across a temperate desert ecosystem in northwes...

It has been reported that C-nitration of proteins occurs under nitrative/oxidative stress; however, its role in pathophysiological situations is not fully understood. In this study, we determined that nitration of Tyr(345) and Tyr(368) in the beta-subunit of the mitochondrial F(o)F(1)-ATPase is a major target for nitrative stress in rat liver under in vivo conditions. The chemical characteristi...

Aldosterone controls electrolyte balance by acting on the renal epithelium. However, there is strong evidence that vascular endothelium is another target for mineralocorticoids. Endothelial cells gain sensitivity to diuretics when exposed to aldosterone. Atomic force microscopy detects such phenomena. It is speculated that endothelium and kidney join forces in the regulation of body fluids.

THIS book is intended not only for medical students commencing their clinical training, but also for nurses, physiotherapists, pharamacists and medical technologists. It is asking a great deal of one book to cater for the diverse needs of such groups. Each will certainly find much, to interest them, but also much to disregard. The medical student will derive most benefit from Part I, which deal...

There are few data in the published literature on sweat loss and drinking behaviour in athletes training in a cool environment. Sweat loss and fluid intake were measured in 17 first-team members of an elite soccer team training for 90 min in a cool (5 degrees C, 81% relative humidity) environment. Sweat loss was assessed from the change in body mass after correction for the volume of fluid cons...

The diamondback terrapin, Malaclemys centrata centrata (Latreille), is a thoroughly aquatic turtle living in salt and brackish marshes and estuaries. From its habitat, it is obvious that this animal has to contend with various osmotic conditions. Bentley, Bretz & Schmidt-Nielsen (1967) and just recently Dunson (1969) have already investigated the problem of the salt and water balance in that sp...

The addition of whey protein to a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink has been shown to enhance post-exercise rehydration when a volume below that recommended for full fluid balance restoration is provided. We investigated if this held true when volumes sufficient to restore fluid balance were consumed and if differences might be explained by changes in plasma albumin content. Sixteen participants l...

The fact that living organisms exhibit certain electrical phenomena has long been known, but understanding of their significance and meaning is limited. The attempt to explain the several aspects of biological activity which can be recorded by electrical devices has, in general, rested on the assumption that the underlying phenomena are chemical and that the electrical records represent by-prod...

LTHOUGH clinical studies on the efficacy of desoxycorticosterone therapy A in epilepsy have yielded contradictory results (I, 2), in a few cases a significant decrease in the incidence of grand ma1 seizures has been noted (2). This improvement in the clinical status of the patients was apparently due to a retention of Na in the body, and a loss of K (3). Spiegel (4) administered desoxycorticost...
