本邦において, 脳卒中や心疾患を含む循環器病は, 悪性新生物に次ぐ死亡原因であり, 介護が必要となる主な原因の 1 つでもある。また, 循環器病は医療費の占める割合も大きく, 社会的な影響が大きい疾患群である。 循環器病に対する総合的な対策を進めるために, 「健康寿命の延伸等を図るための脳卒中, 心臓病その他の循環器病に係る対策に関する基本法」が平成 30 (2018) 年 12 月 14 日に成立し, 令和元 (2019) 日施行され, 同法に基づく循環器病対策推進基本計画が令和 2（2020) 10 月27 日に策定された。 本基本計画をもとにして, 都道府県循環器病対策推進計画が策定され, 実行されることによりさまざまな取り組み・対策がさらに進められる。 国におけるこれまでの循環器病対策について概説しつつ, 現状と今後について解説する。
