We prove that the set of homotopy classes of the paths in a topological ring is a ring object (called ring groupoid). Using this concept we show that the ring structure of a topological ring lifts to a simply connected covering space.
The purpose of this note is to use covering space theory to construct new examples of buildings. On the level of Coxeter systems, this contsruction was described previously in Davis [4]. It goes as follows. Start with a Coxeter system (W ′, S). Change some m(s, t)’s in its Coxeter matrix from integers ≥ 2 to the symbol ∞ . This defines a new Coxeter system (W, S). Suppose C′ is a building of ty...
This article contains a new argument which proves vanishing of the first cohomology for negative vector bundles over a complex projective variety if the rank of the bundle is smaller than the dimension of the base. Similar argument is applied to the construction of holomorphic functions on the universal covering of the complex projective variety .
This paper describes certain properties of the fundamental group of the shrinking wedge of circles. Covering space theory is an inadequate tool since the shrinking wedge of circles is not semi-locally simply connected. We conclude with the fact that the shrinking wedge of circles is not homotopy equivalent to the wedge product of a countable number of circles.
We relate a part of the abelian étale fundamental group of curves over local fields to the component group of the Néron model of the jacobian. We apply the result to the modular curve X0(p)/Qp to show that the unramified abelian covering X1(p) → X0(p) (Shimura covering) uses up all the possible ramification over the special fiber of X0(p).
This paper gives a new proof of a result of Geoghegan and Mihalik which states that whenever a contractible open n-manifold W which is not homeomorphic to Rn is a covering space of an n-manifold M and either n ≥ 4 or n = 3 and W is irreducible, then the group of covering translations injects into the homeotopy group of W .
This paper describes components of a branch-and-cut algorithm for solving integer linear programs having a large symmetry group. It describes an isomorphism pruning algorithm and variable setting procedures using orbits of the symmetry group. Pruning and orbit computations are performed by backtracking procedures using a Schreier-Sims table for representing the symmetry group. Applications to h...
A cover starter is a single vector that yields a covering array under the actions of groups on both the columns and the symbols of the starter. The existence of this compact representation of covering arrays facilitates effective exhaustive and heuristic search. When the group action on symbols fixes a small number f of symbols, such cover starters lead to covering arrays that embed covering ar...
Let X̃ be a connected space, X be a space, let p : X̃ −→ X be a continuous map and let (X̃, p) be a covering space of X . In the first section we give some preliminaries from covering spaces and their automorphism groups. In the second section we derive some algebraic properties of both universal and regular covering spaces (X̃, p) of X and also their automorphism groups A(X̃, p). Keywords—covering ...
Coverings in the representation theory of algebras were introduced for the Auslander-Reiten quiver of a representation finite algebra in [15] and later for finite dimensional algebras in [2, 7, 11]. The best understood class of covering functors is that of Galois covering functors F : A → B determined by the action of a group of automorphisms of A. In this work we introduce the balanced coverin...
