We established a straightforward murine model of oropharyngeal candidiasis. Mice were immunosuppressed with cortisone acetate, anesthetized, and then inoculated by placing cotton wool balls saturated with Candida albicans sublingually for 2 h. A prolonged, reproducible infection was induced. This model may be useful for antifungal screening or pathogenesis studies.

In this short communication we report a quick, cost-free method of purification of DNA fragments from agarose gel. Unlike those procedures that involve commercial kits, this method uses glass wool or absorbent cotton to filter agarose gel during a quick spinning-down of DNA, thus significantly simplifying the routine practice of many molecular biologists and decreasing the cost.

Eighty children had cotton wool pledgets inserted under the nail corner for ingrowing toenails. Success was achieved in 44 (72%) of the 61 children followed up for a mean of 2.5 years. Appearance was excellent and compliance high. Initial insertion under anaesthesia improved the results, and chronicity did not adversely affect the outcome.
