We study here some linear elliptic partial differential equations (with Dirichlet, Fourier or mixed boundary conditions), to which convection terms (first order perturbations) are added that entail the loss of the classical coercivity property. We prove the existence, uniqueness and regularity results for the solutions to these problems. Mathematics Subject Classification (2000): 35J25.
Although coercion by cyberpower alone may be limited today, if appropriate steps are taken, by the year 2035 cyberpower will be a useful coercive instrument of power. This essay explores the reasons why cyberpower is not coercive today, and ways it may become more coercive in the future. The cyber attacks employed against Estonia and Iran provide evidence cyberpower is currently not coercive, a...
This study aims at investigating the impact of parental practices on youths' adjustment. In all, 605 adolescents completed questionnaires at ages 14, 16 and 18. Self-esteem, psychological distress as well as parental emotional support and coercive control were measured. Analyses based on individual growth models revealed that self-esteem increased with age, but psychological distress remained s...
We extend existing research on police use of coercive mechanisms of social control against racial/ethnic minority populations by testing three structural hypotheses regarding excessive force. The minority threat hypothesis maintains that the greater the proportion of minority residents in a city, the greater the use of coercive crime control mechanisms. The place hypothesis argues that spatiall...
Moral reasoning, moral affect, social problem solving skills, and social preferences were assessed in 163 ethnically mixed preschoolers (2.86-5.95 years). Participants were rated by their teachers on prosocial and coercive strategies of control, success at resource control, and aggression (overt and relational). Based on their employment of coercive and prosocial strategies of resource control,...
Enhanced Faraday effect of cube-shaped EuS nanocrystals (average crystal size = 12 nm) with a coercive field is demonstrated for the fast time. The coercive field and the remanent magnetization of cube-shaped EuS nanocrystals were found to be 0.011 T and 0.05 μB, respectively, using a SQUID (superconducting quantum interface device). Consideration of the volume percentages of cube-shaped EuS na...
The spectral factorization problem of a scalar coercive spectral density is considered in the framework of the CallierDesoer algebra of distributed parameter system transfer functions. Criteria for the infinite product representation of a coercive spectral density and for the convergence of infinite product representations of spectral factors, i.e. for the convergence of the symmetric extractio...
We show that existence of a non-coercive Lyapunov function is sufficient for uniform global asymptotic stability (UGAS) of infinite-dimensional systems with external disturbances provided an additional mild assumption is fulfilled. For UGAS infinite-dimensional systems with external disturbances we derive a novel ’integral’ construction of non-coercive Lipschitz continuous Lyapunov functions. F...
