The encapsulation of homogeneous chiral catalysts, e.g. Co(Salen) and Ru-TsDPEN, in the mesoporous cage of SBA-16 is demonstrated; the encapsulated catalysts show performance as good as that of the homogeneous catalysts, and can be recycled for more than 10 times without significant loss of catalytic performance.

The use of (salen)Co catalysts as a new class of bench-stable stereoselective glycosylation promoters of trichloroacetimidate glycosyl donors at room temperature is described. The C(2)-symmetrical "salen" ligand (+)-9 bearing two [5]ferrocenophane substituents has been prepared in five steps starting from readily available diacetylferrocene, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde and (R,R)-N,N'-diphenylethylenediamine. Reaction of (+)-9 with Mn(OAc)(3), Co(OAc)(2) ZnEt(2) or UO(2)(OAc)(2) gave the corresponding metal-complexes which were characterised by spectroscopic methods.
