s | 51 PM415 Clozapine-induced anemia and thrombocytosis Hanson Park, So Yeon Jeon St. Andrew’s Hospital, Republic of Korea Abstract Objective of the study: Clozapine is one of well-known antipsychotics which causes hematologic adverse effects, specifically neutropenia and agranulocytosis (1–3% of patients). We found a rare case of thrombocytosis and anemia after the re-administration of clozap...
OBJECTIVE A number of studies have demonstrated the anti-aggressive properties of clozapine in schizophrenia and its positive effect in borderline personality disorder. There is no published literature on the treatment of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) with clozapine. We present a case series of 7 patients with primary ASPD and high psychopathic traits treated with clozapine, having a s...
blood dyscrasia Dunk et al (2006) investigated 53 patients who were rechallenged with clozapine following leucopenia or neutropenia during previous therapy and found that 33 did not experience a second episode of blood dyscrasia and were able to continue drug treatment. This result is of considerable clinical relevance because it suggests that some patients with leucopenia or neutropenia may un...
About one third of patients with schizophrenia respond unsatisfactorily to antipsychotic treatment and are termed "treatment-resistant". Clozapine is still the gold standard in these cases. However, 40%-70% of patients do not improve sufficiently on clozapine either. In the search for more efficacious strategies for treatment-resistant schizophrenia, drugs with different pharmacological profile...
R.P. was a 26-year old man with a 9-year history of schizophrenia. Refractory to previous trials of antipsychotics, he was prescribed clozapine. After 3 weeks of 225 mg/d on clozapine, we noted a remarkable improvement in his clinical status; 2 weeks later (5 weeks after initiating clozapine), we found his total cholesterol and triglyceride levels to be substantially elevated compared with prec...
neuroleptic malignant syndrome (nms) is a rare fatal medical complication that occurs as a result of dopaminergic receptor blockage in the caudate at the termination of the nigrostriatal pathways (1), and may occur at any time following consumption of dopamine antagonists. this disorder also occurs in cases of sudden discontinuation of dopamine agonists and antagonists (2,3). some studies have ...
Introduction: Higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in schizophrenia have suggested that dysfunctions of the immune system may play a role in this disabling condition. The current study was performed to discover if low dose celecoxib combined with clozapine may improve symptoms of schizophrenia or not. Methods:<span...
Clozapine is an effective antipsychotic drug but is associated with serious side effects. Most treatment guidelines give no clear recommendations on regular monitoring of liver function tests, even though up to 60% of patients experience elevations in hepatic transaminases, with 15% to 30% experiencing an elevation two to three times greater than normal. Though elevations in liver function test...
BACKGROUND Lipid accretion is one of the major side effects of clozapine pharmacotherapy of schizophrenia that made clozapine into an interesting obesity drug model. METHOD Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) engine was used for core analysis and building the networks of weight regulation. RESULTS The examination of molecules that were selected into 'clozapine neighborhood' identified them as ...
We describe a patient with Schizophrenia and secondary enuresis. The enuresis settled with resolution of his psychotic symptoms but later remerged after starting Clozapine. We explore the mechanisms of incontinence in Schizophrenia and those due to Clozapine. This case highlights the need to inquire about incontinence in patients with schizophrenia prior to prescribing clozapine.
