toxoplasma gondii is one of the most prevalent parasitic infections in world. rh, ned and me49 are of the most prevalent clonal types of the parasite isolated till now. differences in pathogenicity and virulence of different types have been investigated in different studies. no controlled study was performed to compare the ability of different types to initiate humoral immune response. we inves...

Antigenic variation, a clonal phenotypic variation developed by microorganisms, involves the permanent switching of homologous, antigenically different cell surface molecules. In pathogenic microorganisms, antigenic variation is often described as a mechanism to evade the host immune system and therefore is responsible for the generation of chronic and/or recurrent infections. However, antigeni...

Methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus isolates, recovered from 204 patients in our hospital in a 22-month period, were characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Among the multiple S. aureus types six clonal lineages dominated, comprising isolates from 158 patients. Despite the limited genetic variation, cross-transmission was made plausible only sporadically.

The mangrove killifish is the only vertebrate known to have a mixed-mating strategy, where hermaphrodites reproduce by either self-fertilisation or cross-breeding. New molecular evidence from this species reveals that occasional cross-breeding between common hermaphroditic individuals and rare pure males results in an injection of genetic variation into otherwise highly homozygous 'clonal' line...

BACKGROUND Mesenchyme-derived airway cell populations including airway smooth muscle (ASM) cells, fibroblasts and myofibroblasts play key roles in the pathogenesis of airway inflammation and remodeling. Phenotypic and functional characterisation of these cell populations are confounded by their heterogeneity in vitro. It is unclear which mechanisms underlie the creation of these different sub-p...

Clonality is a widespread life history trait in flowering plants that may be essential for population persistence, especially in environments where sexual reproduction is unpredictable. Frequent clonal reproduction, however, could hinder sexual reproduction by spatially aggregating ramets that compete with seedlings and reduce inter-genet pollination. Nevertheless, the role of clonality in rela...

Artificial immune systems are a kind of new computational intelligence methods which draw inspiration from the human immune system. Most immune system inspired optimization algorithms are based on the applications of clonal selection and hypermutation, and known as clonal selection algorithms. These clonal selection algorithms simulate the immune response process based on principles of Darwinia...

Characterizing genetic variation in parasite transmission traits and its contribution to parasite vigor is essential for understanding the evolution of parasite life-history traits. We measured genetic variation in output, activity, survival, and infection success of clonal transmission stages (cercaria larvae) of a complex life cycle parasite (Diplostomum pseudospathaceum). We further tested i...

Genetic variation for fitness-relevant traits may be maintained in natural populations by fitness differences that depend on environmental conditions. For herbivores, plant quality and variation in chemical plant defences can maintain genetic variation in performance. Apart from plant secondary compounds, symbiosis between plants and endosymbiotic fungi (endophytes) can produce herbivore-toxic ...
