Increasing evidence supports the contribution of local inflammation to the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology, although the precise mechanisms are not clear. In this study, we demonstrate that the pro-inflammatory protein S100A9 interacts with the Aβ1-40 peptide and promotes the formation of fibrillar β-amyloid structures. This interaction also results in reduced S100A9 cytotoxic...

BACKGROUND An association between systemic inflammatory markers and the presence and severity of atherosclerotic plaques has not been demonstrated in a nonselected population. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of inflammatory markers with aortic atherosclerotic plaques in a sample of the general population and in a subgroup free of clinical vascular disease. METHODS Tra...

A femtosecond CARS-based nonlinear optical microscope was used to simultaneously image extracellular structural proteins and lipid-rich structures within intact aortic tissue obtained from myocardial infarction-prone Watanabe heritable hyperlipidemic rabbits (WHHLMI). Clear differences in the NLO microscopic images were observed between healthy arterial tissue and regions dominated by atheroscl...

INTRODUCTION The detection of atherosclerotic plaques at risk for disruption will be greatly enhanced by molecular probes that target vessel wall biomarkers. Here, we test if fluorescently-labeled Activatable Cell Penetrating Peptides (ACPPs) could differentiate stable plaques from vulnerable plaques that disrupt, forming a luminal thrombus. Additionally, we test the efficacy of a combined ACPP...

Malignant transformation of endometriosis is an infrequent complication. Clear cell carcinoma from endometriosis is very rare in the paraovarian cyst. To date no cases have been reported. We report a case of clear cell carcinoma arising from endometriosis of the paraovarian cyst with a brief review of literature.

Histochemical analysis of Alzheimer disease (AD) brain tissues indicates that butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) is present in β-amyloid (Aβ) plaques. The role of BuChE in AD pathology is unknown, but an animal model developing similar BuChE-associated Aβ plaques could provide insights. The APPSWE/PSEN1dE9 transgenic mouse (ADTg), which develops Aβ plaques, was examined to determine if BuChE associa...

Neuritic (senile) plaques are a hallmark of the pathology found in the brain of patients afflicted with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Neuritic plaques have been considered to be composed of an amyloid core surrounded by dilated neurites, although the use of anti-beta/A4-protein antibody revealed the presence of diffuse plaques without a nuclear-like central mass or surrounding paired helical filame...

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to estimate the survival impact of lymphadenectomy in patients diagnosed with uterine clear cell cancer (UCCC). METHODS Patients with a diagnosis of UCCC were identified from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program from 1988 to 2007. Only surgically treated patients were included. Statistical analysis using Student t-test, Kaplan-Meier su...
