We have screened a human DNA library using as probe a chimpanzee sequence that contains homology to the polymerase gene of the endogenous baboon virus. One set of overlapping clones spans about 20 kilobases and contains regions of DNA sequence homology to the gag p30, gag p15, and polymerase genes of Moloney murine leukemia virus. Furthermore, the spacings are the same as in Moloney virus betwe...

We tested whether a chimpanzee fetus could form an association between an extrauterine tone and vibroacoustic stimulation (VAS) using classical conditioning treatment. Two kinds of pure tone were used as the conditioned stimuli, one where a 500-Hz tone was always followed by a VAS of 80 Hz (110 gal), the unconditioned stimulus (US), and another where a 1000-Hz tone was never followed by a VAS. ...

Human-chimpanzee comparative genome research is essential for narrowing down genetic changes involved in the acquisition of unique human features, such as highly developed cognitive functions, bipedalism or the use of complex language. Here, we report the high-quality DNA sequence of 33.3 megabases of chimpanzee chromosome 22. By comparing the whole sequence with the human counterpart, chromoso...

The chimpanzee and African green monkey insulin genes have been cloned and sequenced. These two sequences together with the previously reported sequences for the human and owl monkey insulin genes provide additional support for the hominoid-rate-slowdown hypothesis, i.e., a slower rate of nucleotide substitution in humans and apes than in monkeys. When these sequences and other primate sequence...

Chimpanzee societies generally show male philopatry and female dispersal. However, demographic data on wild chimpanzee from long-term study sites have revealed that some females give birth in their natal group (i.e., “remaining females”). Here, we report two remaining the M Mahale, Tanzania, compare cases with previous reports to explore social ecological factors lead group. The results neither...
