We reformulated a multiplex PCR algorithm for serotyping of pneumococcal meningitis directly on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Compared to established methods on isolates, CSF-based PCR had at least 80% sensitivity and 100% specificity. In regional meningitis surveillance, CSF-based PCR increased the serotype information yield from 40% of cases (isolate testing) to 90%.
Cerebrospinal fluid gamma-aminobutyric acid (CSF-GABA) was analysed by radioreceptor assay in 16 normal controls and 84 patients with various neurological and psychiatric diseases. In patients with spinocerebellar degeneration, neuro-Beh9et's syndrome and Parkinson's disease, CSF-GABA levels were decreased. On the other hand, increased CSF-GABA levels were detected in patients with meningitis.
Moxifloxacin cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) penetration was evaluated by obtaining full plasma and CSF time concentration curves for 4 patients with tuberculous meningitis. The geometric mean ratio of the areas under the curve for CSF to plasma were 0.82 (range, 0.70-0.94) at 400 mg once per day and 0.71 (0.58-0.84) at 800 mg once per day.
In nine out of 11 patients with herpes zoster and neurological symptoms varicella-zoster antigen was demonstrated in CSF cells by indirect immunofluorescent staining. Cerebrospinal fluid cytology was in most cases highly suggestive of viral infection. This study demonstrates the value of both immunofluorescent staining on CSF cells and CSF cytology, as corroboration of an otherwise exclusively ...

Among 384 patients with confirmed meningococcal disease, the likelihood of detecting Neisseria meningitidis DNA in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) increased with age, serogroup B infection, and prehospitalization antibiotic treatment. Plasma and CSF genomic bacterial loads of non-B N. meningitidis serogroups correlated significantly. Serogroup B-infected patients with genotype TNF2 (-308A) had signif...
MAREN, THOMAS H. Bicarbonate formation in cetebrospinal fluid: role in sodium transport and pH regulation. Am. J. Physiol. 222(4) : 885-899. 1972.-Two series of experiments were performed which clarified the role of HCOaformation and movement into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and its relation to sodium transport and pH regulation. In the first, the rates of access of HC03, Na+, and Clfrom plasma ...
The concentration of oestrone in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from obese young women with pseudotumour cerebri was much greater than predicted and found in normal subjects. Each woman with pseudotumour cerebri, and a high level of CSF oestrone and a CSF protein less than 0·2 g/l, had clinical improvement when treated with an 800 calorie/day diet and dexamethasone 2 mg/day.
Four diluents were compared as reference standards for the assay of gentamicin in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF): human CSF, human serum, distilled water, and 150 mmol NaCl/4.5 mmol CaCl2. Standards prepared in pooled human serum were the best alternative to CSF for the assay of gentamicin and were also useful for the assay of tobramycin, netilmicin, amikacin, and sisomicin. The pH (6.0-9.8) of CSF ...
Measurements of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma amino acid concentrations have been made in 12 patients with the Guillain-Barré syndrome. The CSF protein concentration was normal in seven specimens and raised in 13. Abnormalities of the CSF amino acid profile were found in all specimens but were more marked in those with a raised CSF protein concentration. The possible causes and diagnosti...
