Barium ions enter chromaffin cells via voltage-sensitive calcium channels, although the intracellular site of barium action is distinct from that of calcium. The entry of barium primarily through voltage-sensitive channels was indicated by experiments showing inhibition of 133Ba2+ uptake by blockers of voltage-dependent calcium channels. In addition, 133Ba2+ uptake was stimulated by 50 mM KCl b...
Tumours arising in the chemoreceptor system are termed chemodectomas. Intrathoracic chemodectoma is a rare tumour, only 74 cases having been described by 1977.1 Systemic catecholamine secretion by an intrathoracic chemodectoma is very uncommon andwe have been able to trace only one other published case report of proven catecholamine secretion. We describe a second case and discuss briefly these...
Checking catecholamine stability in whole blood, plasma, and platelets, we found that specimens stored at room temperature or frozen for periods ranging from 1.5 h to three weeks show no significant difference in measured catecholamine concentration. The implications of these findings are discussed.
Twenty patients presenting to an A&E department with acute severe asthma were studied. Despite clinically severe airway obstruction few had raised catecholamine levels. However several patients with impending respiratory arrest had markedly elevated catecholamine levels, and relationships are demonstrated between these levels and other measures of disease severity.
The neurophysiological basis of motivation became a major research goal with the discovery of brain self-stimulation. Correlative anatomical and neurochemical mapping of self-stimulation sites led to the catecholamine theory of self-stimulation. The present review summarizes the pharmacological evidence pertinent to this theory and formulates conclusions on the functional role of catecholamine ...
The significance of intracellular Na+ concentration in catecholamine secretion of cultured bovine adrenal chromaffin cells was investigated using the monovalent carboxylic ionophore monensin. This ionophore, which is known to mediate a one-for-one exchange of intracellular K+ for extracellular Na+, induces a slow, prolonged release of catecholamines which, at 6 h, amounts of 75-90% of the total...
An in situ saline-perfused systemic heart/posterior cardinal vein preparation of the Atlantic hagfish (Myxine glutinosa) was used to assess (1) the ability of the chromaffin tissue to release catecholamines in response to adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH; 7.5 i.u. kg-1), serotonin (250 nmol kg-1), carbachol (100 µmol kg-1), [Asn1-Val5]angiotensin II (Ang II; 100 nmol kg-1), histamine (0....
Mice lacking catecholamines die before birth, some with cardiovascular abnormalities. To investigate the role of catecholamines in development, embryonic day 12.5 (E12.5) fetuses were cultured and heart rate monitored. Under optimal oxygenation, wild-type and catecholamine-deficient fetuses had the same initial heart rate (200-220 beats/min), which decreased by 15% in wild-type fetuses during 5...
BACKGROUND Management of cardiac surgery patients is a very standardized procedure in respective local institutions. Yet only very limited evidence exists concerning optimal indication, safety and efficacy of hemodynamic monitoring catecholamine and fluid therapy. METHODS Between April and May 2013, all 81 German anaesthesia departments involved in cardiac surgery care were asked to participa...
